Football: UNT head coach resting at home after having gallbladder removed

North Texas coach Darrell Dickey had his gallbladder removed over the weekend and is resting at his home.

“I feel a lot better already,” Dickey said. “I am going to get back at it this week, although the doctors told me to take it easy for a while.”

Dickey fell ill on Jan. 29 following an official visit weekend for the Mean Green and was admitted to Presbyterian Hospital of Denton. He was released two days later and spoke at UNT’s press conference on National Signing Day on Wednesday.

Dickey said at the time that he needed to undergo a few more tests to determine the cause of his illness.

Doctors decided later in the week that Dickey needed to have his gallbladder removed.

“We had surgery scheduled for later, but the doctor who performed the procedure had an opening on his schedule,” Dickey said. “I went in Friday, had the surgery Saturday morning and left on Sunday.”

A quick return from surgery could enable Dickey to oversee the Mean Green’s spring practices that are scheduled to begin on Feb. 13.

Dickey finished his eighth season as UNT’s head coach in November.

The former Kansas State quarterback led the Mean Green to four straight Sun Belt Conference titles from 2001-04. UNT’s streak came to an end last season when the Mean Green finished 2-9.

Dickey has been named the Sun Belt’s Coach of the Year four times and has an overall record of 39-55.

If it was "band-aid" surgery, he should be out there on opening day. My wife went home the afternoon of her morning gallbladder surgery.
