Pitiful Officiating... mad.gif

I am usually not one to be negative about things, but I feel like I need to get it off my chest.

Regardless of who won or lost tonight...the Ref's were horrible tonight. They absoluteley destroyed a potentially great game, and pissed off a lot of potential fans in the seats. I never felt like the game ever really got going. It was just whistle after whistle. Even if we would have won, I still would have made this post. It's not just because we lost.

The worst damage that they did for our fan base was, that they did not allow 2 very physical teams battle it out where they needed to play, and see who was a physically superior team.

To keep themselves clear of anything that pointed to being slanted either way, they just kept calling fouls back and forth. I bet that the fouls total was almost dead even for both teams.

Even though I am all for the Mean Green, the refs even botched MANY calls for South Ala tonight also. Needless to say they really missed, and miscalled many fouls tonight. I thought it was interesting that several of the calls that one ref would make, would be overturned for an even more severe or reverse foul. It looked like the crew was having a power struggle on the court toninght.

What was the hoopla all about for the Technical that got Coach Jones fired up...our player (H. Edwards?) hung on the rim because there were 3 other players beneath him. Why the Technical?? I know Johnny wanted to ring that guys neck mad.gif

Bottom line, if we are to get crowds out to watch EXCITING Basketball, the excitement of the game cannot be destroyed by poor or tight officiating. Go ahead and call the blatant stuff, but let them play so that the fans can enjoy the game.

I feel better now wink.gif , just don't allow that crew to appear on our court EVER again!

SA was really quick, that press was a bitch, and they could sink it from beyond.

Every NT run seemed to be stopped with a SA bomb.

refs called it bad both ways, but SA was better tonight.

they hit them when they needed to.

I agree with Marc completly. I have seen some amount of this all year (even when we win), but tonight was absolutly horrible all game long. I don't care to have an even amount of fouls, just a well officialed game.

Regardless, USA had an answer for everything we threw at them tonight, they deserve the win.

Sturns was the one hanging on the rim, and as I've said in another thread, what call gives the other team 2 freethrows and then you get the ball back under the basket?

I think in the start of the 2nd half there were 5-6 fouls called in the first 2 and a half minutes.

Sturns was hanging on after going for a rebound to keep from coming down on top of another player (which is legal and is no foul). At the same time another NT player tipped the rebound toward the basket and it went in while Sturns was hanging on. The refs at first ruled offensive goaltending then changed to a technical for hanging on (wrong) and awarded USA 2 shots. I don't know why NT got the ball back.

I also don't know why our coaches didn't challenge more calls like that one. Maybe a coach getting ejected would have inspired the players more? The refs were inconsistant and tried to control the game too much while letting some blatant fouls go uncalled. But USA was quicker overall and we couldn't handle their backcourt press at all. Too many turnovers and poor shooting percentage doomed us. Another lost opportunity to gain and keep some new fans. sad.gif

That call was pretty bad. It was outrageous, actually. Sturns, even without the player to land on, wasn't at all capable of blocking the shot or even tipping it in. The fouls, both of them, were off. He might've been in position, but if you got a replay, you'd see he wasn't really paying attention to the ball.

The refs didn't beat us. We lost to a better team.

That being said, swallow the dang whistle and let 'em play for gosh sakes! What a beating...watching a game where there's a whistle every trip down the floor. You always hear that a foul could be called on every possession. Well, these guys decided to do it.

The officials made the right call. Sturns grasped and pulled down the rim for no reason. No there was not a player underneath of him. Anytime a player grasp and pulls the rim without cause it is a techinical foul. We got the ball back, because at the time the ball was in the air, so they went to a jump ball.

I believe it was KD... Not Sturns
