North Texas rallies past Arkansas State

Associated Press

JONESBORO, Ark. – Kendrick Davis and Isaac Hines scored 17 points each to help North Texas get a come-from-behind win Saturday over Arkansas State.

North Texas (11-6, 4-2 Sun Belt Conference) trailed 37-31 at intermission, but surged back to outscore the Indians (8-13, 3-4) 51-42 in the second half.

Hines' scoring included 3-of-4 from 3-point range. He and Davis also set the pace for the Mean Green at the free-throw line, with Hines hitting 2-of-2 and Davis going 6-for-6 as their team hit 21-of-24 foul shots.

The Indians fell far short of that mark, despite many more opportunities, making just 23-of-37 free throws.

Harold Edwards added 11 points for North Texas, while Calvin Watson and Jeffrey Simpson came off the bench to score 10 each.

Isaac Wells led ASU with 20 points, with Marcus Ardison adding 14, Dereke Tipler 12, Yual Hanks 11 and Jim Jones 10.

Depth really came into play this game. ASU has 5 players with 30+ minutes while only two of our guys played 30+ minutes. When you can keep your top players fresh in the second half that is a huge advantage. Also, it is great to see 21-24 from the FT line. It is no coincidence that we won the game when the opponent shot 48% from the field, 50% behind the arc, yet only 62% from the FT line, where we shot 87.5%.

I am glad you mention the free throw percentage because we have been on the teams case previously about that issue. For this game, they really took care of business. I think Harold Edwards was 3-6 from the stripe and he was the only player to miss there. (Good game from him BTW)
