WW back picks Texas State

Bush chooses 1-AA power over TCU, UNT, Houston

By Jason Della Rosa

Herald Democrat

WHITEWRIGHT — There were bigger schools on Karrington Bush’s short list. But the words of Texas State head coach David Bailiff stuck with him on his visit to the school this past weekend.

“Their head coach told me, ‘if you come here, you can help us win the national championship,’” Bush said.

The invitation was too enticing to turn down and the senior running back picked Texas State over North Texas, Houston and TCU.

Verbal commitments are non-binding. The first day high school recruits can sign national letters of intent is Feb. 1.

Bush ran for 1,703 yards and scored 27 total touchdowns in helping lead Whitewright to the District 15-2A crown before the Tigers lost in the bi-district round to DeKalb.

He was the 15-2A Most Valuable Player and was selected to the Associated Press 2A All-State first team.

The standout sat out as a junior after a sophomore season when he rushed for 865 yards and 10 touchdowns while catching 41 passes for 665 yards and six touchdowns as Whitewright advanced to the region final.

Bush made his official visit Saturday with his guardians, Larry and Jennifer Henderson.

“It was nice,” Bush said. “Their campus is really big. Their offense is what I look for in terms of how I run.”

Texas State went 11-3, captured a share of its first-ever Southland Conference title, advanced to the Division I-AA national semifinals before losing to Northern Iowa, and was ranked No. 4 in the final national poll.

There were six running backs on the Texas State roster in 2005 and three of them are graduating. Whitewright head coach Chuck Lipsey said that the Bobcats have recruited Bush since his sophomore year and view him as the No. 1 running back in their recruiting class.

“They’ve been after him almost every day,” Lipsey said. “That ends up meaning a lot.”

Bush was one of 15 other recruits visiting Texas State that day. Euless Trinity quarterback Trevor Vittatoe was another who gave a verbal commitment to the Bobcats.

No reason to sweat this too much. TxSt lost their starting tailback to graduation so they probably told this kid he could come right in and possibly start? The guy they lost finished 5th in conference in rushing. Their QB, Nealy, happened to finish 1st in rushing in the conference. You think they mentioned that to the recruit when they brought up the type of system they use?

It would be nice if those in the athletic dept (both coaches & executive staff) had this attitude as well, regardless if that is realistic or not.

Coach Fry had this kind of vision, and we all know the success he had here and throughout his career.

Vic Trilli had that kind of attitude, and unfortunately it was not enough. Winning takes more than an attitude.

They (recruits) are not stupid. If DD went into some kids house and said, "Hey (top recruit) if you come to NT you could help us win a NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP, you could help put NT in a BCS bowl!" They would absolutly laugh his butt right out of the living room.

Some of you must get some reality in your daily diets. Eat more carrots or something.

is losing a player to texas state really losing a player?

there are things that are not in articles about kids who choose the smaller uni. their academics could be a reason, the fact that the kid may not adjust well under d-1 requirements...it could be a case where nt,tcu, and hou all have the backfields back, and this kid would not have an oppt to play.

this kid obviously had options, d-1 options, all program who have had success, andhe chose tx state...good luck young man.

No one's laughing at Gary Patterson right now...Sometimes to build higher you have to think big or at least have bigger goals than "As long as the only game we win is SMU!" Do you want Dickey to recruit with that?

"Son, you could help us beat SMU!"

"Gee coach, that sounds swell! As long as that is the only team I help you beat."

"Boy, you got a deal!"

Yeah, impossible, because Utah didn't do it. And TCU getting a fat head at SMU was the only thing keeping them from doing it.

For me I would pitch the talent that we currently have in the NFL instead of what we can win here, but offensively, other than Waters at KC, that's not going to help much. Look at Miami OH, Marshall, ULL and other schools that have placed some of the top QB's currently playing in the NFL. These schools can go after a broader range of offensive talent because of that. At least it seems to me they could? I wished we would change offensive systems because of this, and because of a few others of course like boringness...blah blah blah rolleyes.gif

How would this be stupid??? The additional BCS Bowl is geared for Mid Major schools. UNT has a legitimate chance to go to this Bowl every year. Why not have the attitude that NT's goal is to reach this Bowl?

They are not very smart if they think a National Championship in 1-AA is anything more than a glorified high school playoff game. And to choose a 1-AA program over a 1-A offer?

----A lot of players will go where they think they can play and soon. If you look at NFL rosters, you will notice there are a lot of players from smaller schools and Mid-Majors and most of them came from programs that won quite a bit. Some recruits are smart enough to realize that aren't going to start much a BCS school unless they are truly outstanding. The Southlake QB woke up and realized that Graham Harrell was at Tech and was going to be for several years-- so he decided to head elsewere instead of where he had originally committed.

---Some kids just don't want to go to a mega-university especially if they are from a smaller town... and shock-- some actually go to get an education because of the academic programs available [especailly if they have no NFL expections]. I have always been amazed that some local soccer male players go to some micky-mouse college to play soccer when they could have afforded to attend some decent university.

We may have been intrested in this kid, but who knows how much intrest we actually had. We probably didn't even offer him. We talked to him at a few points never offered and then Texas St. offered. You can't sit here and say we lost a recruit to a D-1AA school.
