The video of the 1988 game (along with many others) is available at this website:

I've never seen this game, but I would definitely be interested in viewing it.

It was a great game, not just because who was in it, but it was back and forth and a lot of tension. NT was ranked #1 in 1-AA at the time and had already beaten Rice and Texas Tech that season. Scott Davis had over 400+ yards passing against UT. Marcus Camper as receiver and returner was unbelievable.

Actually it wasn't back and forth, NT led from the beginning until the final minute or so. I believe the halftime score was 21-7 or 21-10? NT, and should have been worse.

We were clearly cheated on two different touchdown calls. It wouldn't surprise me if the refs. showed favortism toward them these days, but I doubt that they would try and pull what they did back then. That was just too obvious. I don't really recall the exact halftime score, but I thought we pretty much dominated them the whole game. I was sitting in the north endzone.

All of you are crazy!  Don't let the fact that Vince is no longer a Longhorn get you thinking for 2 seconds that we have a CHANCE at beating Texas.

If you honestly think that we have a chance at beating Texas you are sadly mistaking!

I mean seriously!

I won't take the time to list them, but we ALL know examples of the underdog accomplishing the impossible....I don't think we are "mistaking" for having a positive attitude......on the contrary, your negative attitude is self-defeating....

If you ask, I will provide dozens of "impossible" outcomes of sporting events.....it CAN happen......but probably will not..........GO MEAN GREEN!!!!!!!!!!

You know, when my "Great Gettin' Up Morning" day arrives for me (hopefully when I'm in my 90's) and I look back at my top 5 Mean Green football games of all times, I really do hope that I won't have to include that 1988 "loss" to the Texas Longhorns.

Many of us on this board were at that 1988 game (remember those were the days before Mack Brown arrived & when UT gave us sideline seats); and, yes, it was a good, well played game, but good golly miss molly, lets move on and get this football program out of the doldrums of where beating the 4'th place CUSA FB team in a bowl game is our only nirvana and do things "now" that will create good future memories of actually winnning some of those kind of games such as that one back 1988 (and games such as those we most always seem to lose). Maybe La Tech could teach us a few things on how to seal the deal in those high profile games since they've done it several times.

Our bowl win (out of 4 recent tries) over Cincinnati was a good win in 2002, but Cincinnati as a football school is no University of Tennessee, either. That 1975 NT/Tennessee game (and Mean Green win) will always be at the top of my list for the time being, but I also hope one day in the future when I pick my own Top 5 Mean Green football wins that the one against the Vols will fall way down on the list to #5 (or lower). Truly, I would really like to think that when we all think of our favorite moments with this football program that we will not have to keep going back to last century to come up with those favorite memories.

Of course, NT will have to get out of this "we po' but proud" defeatist attitude for us to get back to the mindset that we can play (competitively) the mainstream teams of NCAA D1-A while beating some of them occasionally (and we ain't nowhere close to that kind of mindset as recent history will prove).

Just to set the record straight, Cincinnati was NOT the 4th place CUSA FB team when we beat them. They were Conference Champions of a conference we were trying to get into. It was a big win for the program. Bigger than the almost/should of/could of/would of win over UT in '88.

We didn't play Rice until the very last game of the season that year. Our next game after that was the 1-AA play-off game with......Marshall.....which we barely lost 0-7. dry.gif
