Mean Green Basketball Teams Look For Second Conference Win On Saturday Night

Courtesy: University of North Texas

Release: 01/06/2006

DENTON (1/6/06) - The Mean Green men's basketball team has won four games in a row and six of its last seven as it is set to host Sun Belt Conference West Division foe New Orleans on Saturday, Jan. 7, in its second of four consecutive home games to open league play. Every North Texas game can be heard live on KWRD (100.7 FM) in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. Tip-off is set for 7 pm.

North Texas opened Sun Belt Conference play with a victory for the second consecutive year and fourth time under head coach Johnny Jones, but has never started with a 2-0 record in the league. The Mean Green has played six of its last seven games at the Super Pit, where it is 7-1 this season, and remains at home for its next three games against two teams from the Sun Belt’s West Division and one from the East.

Saturday’s game will be the 14th meeting ever between North Texas and New Orleans, which played each other for the first time during the 1975-76 season. North Texas swept the season series from the Privateers last year as Sun Belt opponents and has now won the last three regular-season games against the Privateers.

The 3rd Annual Soles vs. Souls charity basketball game pitting North Texas area high school basketball coaches against ministers is set for 5:00 pm on Saturday, January 7th. Tickets for the fundraising basketball game are $8 if purchased in advance and can be bought at www.cadc.org and at participating area DATCU branches. Proceeds benefit the Childrens Advocacy Center of Denton County and tickets will be $10 at gate D of the Super Pit after 4:30 pm. The ticket also gets you into the North Texas game that evening as well. NBA great Spud Webb and North Texas Athletic Director Rick Villarreal will be the honorary coaches of the Souls. George Dunham of the Mean Green Radio Network, KTCK Sportsradio 1310 "The Ticket" and the Dallas Cowboys is also a guest coach of the Soles.
