DENTON (1/5/06) - The Mean Green men's basketball team opens conference play tonight against Louisiana-Lafayette at 7 pm in the Super Pit. North Texas has won three games in a row and five of its last six as it is set to host preseason Sun Belt Conference West Division favorite Louisiana-Lafayette. Every North Texas game can be heard live on KWRD (100.7 FM) in the Dallas/Fort Worth area.

North Texas is in its sixth season as a member of the Sun Belt Conference and will get its league schedule underway with four consecutive home games against three teams from the West Division and one from the East. The Mean Green is 6-1 at home this season, which is its best home record through seven games since the 1994-95 season.

Tonight's game will be the 20th meeting ever between North Texas and Louisiana-Lafayette, which played each other for the first time during the 1949-50 season. The Ragin’ Cajuns lead the series 13-6 and are 8-2 versus NT since the Mean Green joined the Sun Belt in 2000-01.

Sophomore forward Quincy Williams scored a career-high 15 points and pulled down a season-high 10 rebounds against Tulsa for his second career double-double and the first by a North Texas player since Michael Jones scored 11 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in last year’s Sun Belt Tournament against Arkansas State. Over the past two seasons, Williams has now recorded two of NT’s three double-doubles.

North Texas begins Sun Belt Conference play with a two-game road trip starting in New Orleans. The Mean Green has won three straight games and nine of their past 10 and are off to the best start in school history. New Orleans has lost nine straight games. The Privateers will be playing their first game back in the city of New Orleans this season after playing two home games in Tyler due to the affects of Hurricane Katrina.
