Man...if they are already doing this they need some help getting the word out.

The only chili cookoff I have ever seen mentioned as pre game fun was a challenge thrown down by a couple of members of this board.

It needs to be really promoted, have a ton of awards (best overall, hottest, most original, most sexy, most non traditional, most hot girls...etc)

I am sure the exes chapters would throw in a pot, some of the greeks, some from housing, spirit organizations, and a handfull from this board...presto, chili cookoff.

We actually already have a Chili Cook off every year before the Family Day football game. It's sponsored (at least in part) by UNT Housing. I know they have sold Tshirts for it in the past and I think they gave out trophies....Rachel probably can reply with more info...

This is probably the most productive thread in some time. I like the ideas of getting students more involved on gameday. I was thinking of something like the 12th man gig A&M does on gameday. Have a drawing and let one Frat-student a game dress out and be on the sidelines. (you know the other frat brothers and sisters would be there to support him) Give him a "00" number jersey and let that be a tradition. I dont know about playing them on coverage teams, but there may be a place to play them on extra point tries? Obviously we may have to modify it some so it doesnt seem so much like we stole the idea, but I really like it.
Just a thought to get the students to be more of a part???

I disagree with using the 12th man tradition. There's history behind that, and people on the board always complain that we borrow too many traditions already. But to spin off your idea, I think having a fan on the sidelines is a great idea. But let's make it a fundraiser. Do an auction for football/athletics at the beginning of the year. Allow a student (or most likely an alumni) to bid for the "Assistant Coach" for the day thing.

Give the winner a NT polo, ask them to wear khakis, and allow them to hand out Gatorade or water at the game. Maybe get them an autographed football for the game - that would really make some people up the ante. It's a great prize, and a way to allow students/alumni to connect with the team. And it gets us some much needed money. The only trick will be that you've got to actually advertise it to work. But if they throw a little money into promotions and post it on the athletics website, I'll bet they'd get a good response. That kind of prize could probably raise 10K easy. Since I doubt students will have that kind of $$$ to spend on the auction, maybe do a drawing during the first game, using scanned student IDs, and allow a student to come down and cheer with the dancers/cheerleaders for the second half. Give them a special shirt (free shirts always work - especially if it's a unique shirt) and let them help lead some cheers. Or allow them to cheer at the next home game. Either way, it's someone students can connect to, and if you get a loud and crazy fan, it could really make the student side roar.

Yep. Chili cookoff before every Family Weekend game. Those lime green flying worm shirts from several years ago were from the cookoff. I forget what all the qualifications for entering are, but I know just about every residence hall has an entry, and several other organizations around campus also participate. They hold the whole event in the Mean Green Village about 3-4 hours before the game. I'd like to see the university back the event a bit more and throw some more publicity at it. It's becoming more and more popular.

I like the chili cook off idea. I didn't know we already had one, so there's a good suggestion to our lurking admin friends.......Publicize the Chili Cookoff!

I also likes the idea of auctioning off a spot on the sidelines to give water/ towels or something. I think that would be a great fund raiser. So there's another great suggestion.

I knew ya'll could come up with some good stuff.

I also think the AD and Band Director should visit an EPL (english premire league) soccer game or two to get some ideas of songs to play. We need songs that everyone can sing along with.

Watching FlaSt last night just reinforced this idea for me, that dang indian chant they do over and over gets on the oppositions nerves.

We would be the only college I know of that would have the EPL soccer songs bit.

I'd like to revive this thread and add some ideas/thoughts.

I'd like to see some off-season projects to keep people interested and give people something positive to do.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I was thinking that North Texas doesn't any fans with "North Texas vehicles" to show up on campus on game day, as well as to tailgate in and around.

I never hear of, or have seen anyone drive around campus with a green and white vehicle festooned with North Texas flags, banners etc, the day of the game. Or the day before the game, to remind students that there is a home game to attend.

John Denver mention last off-season that he had a VW bug that he would like to get painted Green so that he could take it to the games. If anyone is knowledgable about car body work and/or painting, I think this would be a great off-season project. I would be glad to offer labor on this project.

Another suggestion would be if someone has an old travel trailer or motor home that could be "spruced-up" and painted/decorated for use on gameday tailgating, or to take to out of town games. That would be a great off season project.

Just thowing out some ideas.

Tag the campus the Monday or Tuesday before each home game. Leave a reminder on all the campus flyer boards and green dry-earse marker in every classroom. Chalk the outside walking areas.

Well we paid about $2000 for 2 slabs of driveway (each 10 foot sections). I meant in a relative sense, not that much. Of course I realize it wouldnt be a $1500 job, but I dont operate with the same budget as NT's athletic department. I guess if there is the plan to build a stadium in the next 3-4 years, then it might be a waste of money. For the mean time however, it would be nice to have the stadium we currently use to look half decent. Especially since I anticipate a near-record attendance average next season.

Then again, maybe we want fouts to look rough so that potential donors can see the urgency of getting the new stadium

I feel like the inside of Fouts right now looks the best it can look... but the outside/underneath of the stadium really needs some work done.

The new turf/scoreboard/painted track really make the inside look pretty good.

I agree. The outside area where all the concessions are is very dark and dingy. It's relatively clean, which is nice, but I think it could use a few nicely made signs (in green of course) and some additional lights. We can't do anything about the way the stadium is laid out (I'd love to see a memorabilia/merchandise store and a mini NT athletics museum in the future) but I think some paint and a few additional decorations could make what we've got better. I'm sure it wouldn't be difficult to get some students/alumni to volunteer to help paint/decorate Fouts. Of course, you've got to advertise it first...

Find a way to get the bell tug across the track and positioned by the Model A. Also, years ago Scrappy had a go cart that he would drive around the track. It was the Apple Green and had the Fry era Eagle on it. I loved this as a kid.

Years ago, the folks at Weaver Wisdom Paint and Body Shop did a lot of work on the Model A (?) and the spirit bell. They were always at the games (FB and BB). Mr. Wisdom died not long ago, but Larry is still there at the body shop.
