My feeling is that if your team doesn't have a 50% or above football graduation rate, then you shouldn't be allowed in a bowl game, but that's just me. Players that are drafted after their junior or sophomore redshirt years wouldn't count against that %.

I don't know what UNT's overall student not just student athlete graduation rate is, but ASU and some others had 35% or less for their overall student body. That seems crazy, while other schools have 80 - 90% rates.

UTEP at last of the bowl teams for overall student body graduation rate of 25%, man only 1 in 4 that attend UTEP graduate they need to raise their entrance standards it seems. But the good news is I just saved money on my car insurance.

The good news is UTEP's Football students graduate 34% of the time.

When the average student works finishing school on the pre-ordained timetable just doesn't happen.

One of my fraternity brothers was an engineering major who worked part-time in a local factory. Starting his junior year the company moved him into a training program for industrial engineers and he started working 40 hours a week and going to school. Took seven years to get out. My wife needed 6 hours to graduate when I started law school and rather than her commuting 2 days a week or 3 days a week to finish she was offered a full-time editor's position in our community and didn't finish for another 9 years.

I was on the 9 year plan myself, and I enjoyed every minute of it.

People want to hold athletes to a higher level and so do the universities. They are the faces of the institutions they play for. With that said, everyone must understand the overall graduation rate of the student body isn't even close to ideal. Believe it or not, most kids don't finish college.

but the athletes also do not need to worry about having money to pay rent, finding money to pay for school, that is why so many students do not finish in the 4-5 year span that schools love to use. then throw in that tuition is now rising at 5-10% every year and I am shocked that the College Population is still growing.

I have no problem with holding athletes more accountable they actually have a great advantage over regular working class students and thus they should have a higher graduation rate.

Depends on the sport.

Football players normally don't leave for a road trip until after classes on Friday unless they are going a really long distance or they are playing a mid-week game.

Basketball players will often miss Thursday and Friday on road swings.

Baseball... jeez those guys just disappear in the spring semester, playing a lot of day games and going to tournaments. They rarely if ever fly so they bus and long trips mean more missed class than for the hoops players going to the same location.

You make a good point, in my 3 years with the Tennis Teams we were generally gone most Fridays leaving Friday Morning or Thursday afternoon, funny though that at most schools Tennis Teams always seem to have the highestGPA amongst sports teams.

UNT's most recent (2004) student body grad rate was 39%.

Student athletes was 61%.

Football 64%.

I think Rick V. and his staff deserve some major props for this...this is much higher than before he became the AD.
