First of all....why is Barrick Nealy not a D-1 QB? He completed clutch passes and can run like a deer. I have not been to many Texas State games lately. I've been to 2 in the last 15 years, but have been meaning to go since they are so close to me. (less than an hour away). The student side parking lot was FULL! Each fraternity had a tent and was having a blast tailgating and partying. These guys were pumped. (And....it is now my opinion that TS has the BEST looking girls of any college campus) The game was a sellout. The student sections was out of its mind! It was full of school colors, body paint, and the students were standing, as far as I could tell, the whole game. The game was a sell out. I can't imagine what a D-1 college playoff system would bring to the fans. It would be sick!

It was windy out there today. Kicking game was nuts. TS missed two field goals and didn't even attempt two others that they normally would have. It made the score look closer than it was. Cal Poly scored with about 4 or 5 minutes left. The TS defense shut them down. Fans stormed the field (goal posts were guarded) and it was packed with everyone before too long. By the way, they host a semifinal game next weekend. Go if you can....

I would much rather have Texas State in the SunBelt than FAU or FIU.

Our frats seem like they could learn a lot from the good ole boys down at Texas State.

If NT doesn't stop its myopic thinking, San Marcos is going to blow right past us in stature. As I originally thought, the NAME CHANGE (which we blew!!) has invigorated that school in a big way and that is only going to snowball. For the first time, the students there seem to think that they are on scale with the "States" of the world, and with a little success, that is going to lead to dynamic changes for their athletic program.

NT has to get extremely agressive in many ways, or I guarantee you that we will be left in the dust by another upstart right here in our own backyard. I wouldn't be surprised if they join the Belt in a couple of years and then immediately take off for the WAC. We need to move up NOW to the next level!! The WAC may only be a half a notch up but it IS something! This 1AA conference caliber stuff has got to stop! We've been around too long for this! SCREW THE GEOGRAPHICAL AND FINANCIAL BS! Let's do it in football only and that argument is irrelevant!

Texas State has awesome facilities....

That endzone complex is amazing.

http://txstatebobcats.collegesports.com/fa...facilities.html

And what other D1-AA schools are doing facility-wise just another reason we should really try to keep a perspective with some of our elect who are trying to make folk heros out of some of our NT officals who our present facilities have been built under their watch.

Hellsbells, if NT weren't (basically) in a "catch up" mode of building facilities maybe even some Texas 1-A schools are probably fixin' to replace theirs with newer (or expanded) versions, just where would we be? In fact, if we hadn't built an A/C at EPC, just where would we be among the other Texas NCAA D1-A schools (as well as even some Texas D1-AA schools)? wink.gif

A real folk hero to most of us would be anyone at UNT who goes out, raises the big bucks and then builds for all concerned a (much-needed) NCAA D1-A college football stadium.

As far as Texas State, I think they are quite content with 1-AA for the time being; in fact, our smallish crowd of last Saturday is just a tad below what they average with butts in seats most any year if memory serves me correct.

Addendum: And for what I saw of TSU's football team vs Texas A & M several weeks ago, I'm just glad the 1-AA Bobcats were not on our schedule this Fall. sad.gif

Isn't Nealy another 1-A transfer moving around in search of playing time ? This has become modus operandi for many 1-AA football teams (especially in Southland) thanks to NCAA transfer rules.

You'd hope TSU would pack the place for a National playoff quarterfinal.

Transfer from Houston. One of about 15 transfers on their team.

I watched a half of the SWTSU game on TV. Looked like another 1-AA game to me. Sorry, not overly impressed with their QB either. There is a reason why the guy is playing 1-AA football, HE WASN'T GOOD ENOUGH!

I am surprised that some of you are getting goofy over TSU.

But their uniforms are nice looking. We can't even get that right.

I think the "invigoration" has been a good, imaginative coach putting together an imaginative football program in a very short amount of time. Nearly beating Baylor last year, when Baylor routed us, then nearly beating A&M this year damn sure didn't hurt. That's what puts the mindset forward that you match up with the big boys. Matching up with them on the football field. Until Bailiff got there, TxTs had not had a winning season since the Reagan administration I believe, much less sniff a conference championship. So this winning this for them is new. Remember, this season features Bailiff's first recruiting class. Bailiff was the D coordinator at TCU who had TCU's defense in the top 5 a few years ago. None of this TxTs success surprises me in the least. He is a very good coach and was an even better player for TxTs.

Neally was a D-1 QB. He was recruited by Houston right out from under our noses in Dallas and then later transferred to TxTs. That's what happens when you feature a pro style offense, you get to recruit pro style QB's out of HS. Which you can right off NT from ever recruiting with the style of O we play.

It's sickening for us, but a great season for TxTs.

It's hypocritical to refer to Texas State as SWTSU, then bitch when someone refers to UNT as North Texas State.

Correct, and the actual name is now TSUSM, not Texas State. tongue.gif

Wrong...he is plenty good enough. He complete passes into the wind that I thought were impossible. Don't fool yourself. He is tall, athletic, and has a strong arm. He had fought injuries in the past. One reason for the transfer.

TSU does have some tradition, and although they've been down a bit recently, they are usually decent. A coach named Jim Wacker took them to two national titles in 81 and 82. They always had a lot of fans at those games. I remember one (82 I think) was televised in Austin, and there were about 30K at that game. Dennis Franchione also coached at TSU.

Hey, I don't think those football facilities are as great as some say in this thread. I drove by them on the highway that runs along the open end of the stadium twice on the Friday after Thanksgiving;you can see everything. Had lunch with my kids at Mamacitas before starting back for the Ark St game. I had a chance to scope them out pretty good, and my gut reaction was 5-A high school; Fouts is bigger and better looking.

All stadia look better with a full house, including Fouts. Texas State has a beautiful campus, but they're no reason for stadium envy.

And to add to our reputation in hiring an extremely high percentage of those who will never get to the next level career-wise upon leaving UNT, Coach Francione was even once interested in the UNT head football coaches job, but UNT was not interested in Coach Fran (as the story goes). blink.gif

We seem to have (in our past) run a retirement center for many in the UNT athletic department. This for some employees way too young to really retire but they and their careers seem to be stuck in Denton, Texas.

BUT..........what about a coach who would come to UNT, give us a few years of a bang up job (with OOC wins/ Top 25 rankings) and he even possibly getting a Big 12 or Big 10 job as a result of what he did in Mean Green Country for several football seasons; anyway, using Coach Fran as just one example (since we'll never know if there were others of similar scope applyiing; yet we for darn sure want to avoid such hires at NORTH TEXAS (and so we do). wink.gif

QUESTION: Would you rather have 5 or 6 years of a situation such as UTEP has going now with Coach Price, who upon his arrival took the Miners to first time Top 25 ranking(s) almost overnight, or would you prefer 7-10 years of a SBC/Bottom 10 coexistnace and if we happen to get another bowl game this decade, still losing to the 4'th place CUSA team?

Wacker was an excellent coach and did a good job there, but to clarify, those were NCAA Division 2 championships. North Texas has never been NCAA Division 2. Also, the football facilities at TSSM are good for 1AA, but I wouldn't say that they are overly impressive.

I went to summer school there back in the 80's and had a helluva great time. Not to put down the school, but those were the easiest twelve hours I've picked up in my life.

BTW, if a member of the Texas State System such as Angelo State decided to become Texas State at San Angelo, wouldn't that throw a little monkey wrench into any "Texas State" exclusivity that Texas State may be envisioning? Just a thought.

They are TEXAS STATE. Just like if San Angelo State wanted to change their name which they will not , they would be TEXAS STATE @ San Angelo just like a UTA,UTEP,UTSA,

They were the first to do it now they set the rules for their own system. Just like UT will never become UTAustin. They are the flagship!

ULL an ULM changed at the same time thus creating a UL (city here)

And yes Texas State is gaining ground and UNT will have to compete with them on some level in the future since they are growing at the same rate as UNT except in the Austin/San Antonio Area. They will get to Div 1 status in the next 10 years and yes they will have better facilities.

Go Texas State!

Go Texas State!

Tx State has wanted UNT to play them the past few years and they say we've refused every time (of course, we'd have the last mirage of our success pushed out from under us by losing to them sometime in the past 2 seasons.) Also, prior to this years success, they have fundraised at a similar level as us and, depending on how it breaks down this year, may have moved ahead. Like us, their staff is mostly outsiders/ non-alumni, but they brought in a coach who was an alumn and a good coach for TCU (and for them before - http://txstatebobcats.collegesports.com/sp..._david00.html.)

Their AD is actively pursued by many schools and was a big part of TCU's last AD search before staying. They have also won the past few Southland Commisioners Cups (all around athletic excellence) and have a baseball team that is strong most years and has been able to play with the Texas "big boys" and even win a few.

Yes, the girls are HOT there too. As an added bonus, many sunbathe on the river all afternoon in swimsuits and study - its a great scene.

There's not a doubt in my mind they could have won or finished second in the Sun Belt this year.

There is no reason for this school to pass us, but I fear it may be happening right under our noses.
