I think Phillips, Meager, and Byerly should all get an even shot at QB next year, assuming they're all eligible.

If it is clear that any one of them will not play QB, it would be wise to look at a different position, since they're all good athletes. Meager is fast as hell and would make a good WR if he can catch. Byerly easily has the size to be a DE or TE.

If there is another Zac Taylor available that wants to come here, I say sign him. But a JUCO QB does not need to be our top priority.

What we need is linemen, linemen, linemen. 2 JUCO badasses on each side of the ball, and as many HS recruits as we can haul in.

Edit:

BTW, we may see James Mitchell at tailback more than fullback next year, if Jamario can't loosen up that hamstring. I suspect it has never recovered since he missed the ASU game last year. Somebody needs to enroll that guy in a yoga class.

That is pretty much always the case. However, there have been too many times when our QB had plenty of time, and threw it off the mark. We need someone who can read sophisticated defenses, move to an open passing lane, and throw accurately under pressure. I'd take just the last one to start because the others can be learned. None of the 3 guys you're talking about has ever demonstrated much in any of these areas. With all the thousands of dedicated young players out there, how can this be SUCH a challenge?

I say that if Byerly has the mental attitude for defense, put him at defensive end. Our DE's were way too slim this year and he could provide us with some immediate beef and speed at the position. Of course he would need to get in the weight room a bit as well as make his grades.

Also, after what I saw this year, if we can find a quality JC QB to battle it out with Phillips, I wouldn't mind us moving Meager to backup WR next year. He has the speed and appears to have pretty good hands. Probably not going to happen but that's what I would like to see. We have a couple of other QB candidates (Haynes etc.) that could provide us with depth at the position.

Honestly you wouldn't have liked to see what came after Phillips and Meager. Haynes was not an option at all this season. That was evident when both Phillips and Meager were banged up in the last game and DD still put them back out there. If there had been a viable 3rd QB DD would have used him.

At QB this past year: Meager, Phillips, Haynes, Ieans

For RB next year: Mitchell's got speed, but to be as effective as JT, he has to be faster. I hope JT's hamstring recoups this offseason. He'll have to look at ways to keep it flexible, so yes, yoga isn't just an option, it's probably going to be really helpful in keeping that muscle loose.

I hope we find that JC QB or that one of our two guys shows vast improvement.

Based on DD's QB management this year, I'm not sure he would of used a freshman Peyton Manning had he been on the bench. Maybe Haynes isn't ready yet, but anyone with his kind of numbers in high school certainly deserves a look. Maybe he'll be ready as a backup by next year.

I really hope that JT gets the weight off. I would like to see him closer to 200 lbs. so he can utilize that incredible speed. Less weight usually means less injuries. I'm also hoping that Booger can do the same (substituting 300lbs) and have another shot at the NFL. Too much weight means too many injuries. I have no doubt about that.
