Yes, but that is why athletics now has two employees who raise money only for North Texas athletics, fullltime.

Don't know if many here know it but Chuck Vincent has recently left UNT to become I believe a Vice Principal at Jesuit HS in Dallas. He told us at the La Tech game but we've seen him at other NT games since then. Chuck will be missed in fund raising for NT athletics. sad.gif

I really don't think people come in with a check that bug and have NO IDEA where the money should go. They probably have a pretty good idea of what they want, if they are the ones coming to the school with the money.  If I had millions to give it would go to athletics, as long as they put a bronze statue of an aardvark in front of the stadium, not too much to ask for right?  However, some other alum is probably also going to have specific goals when they pick up the phone and call the development office.

Now, what about people who are contacted by the school, are they going to be given a pitch as to where their money should go.  Yes, but that is why athletics now has two employees who raise money only for North Texas athletics, fullltime.

I think you are absolutely correct on this. You may have smaller donations that are offered up "freely" for use whereever the need is greatest, but the kind of money we are discussing here doesn't just fall into the university's lap. Someone willing to write that kind of check will already have some clear ideas of what they want that money to do (Heck -- I'm pretty opinionated about my annual checks to UNT myself, and they are not that big!). I just don't think there is that much influence to divert the kind of donations we are talking about that would be needed for a new stadium.

{And, for the record, I'm in favor of both the new campus and the stadium. I think they are both worthy endeavors and important to the future of our campus and system.}

Someone, think of the children.... and have Ray take me too.

I was wondering what happened to that post? I didn't realize there was something wrong posting a photo of a chic in a bikini. Sorry about that. Is it ok to link it instead?

We will have to raise $20 million or so before we can bond out the rest.

Before anyone goes on a "LJ Hates the football stadium" rant, please realise we can't use public money for this.  It's state law.  Donations are the only way to do this.

What if we built a really big horseshoe-shaped dorm?

Don't mean to keep going back and forth here, but at UNT we've not had to worry about Big Donors that much as it is anyway; but I do remember reading a Houston Chronicle article years ago about a Big Donor for the University of Houston who did ask UH officials just where his monies could best serve the UH main campus. UH officials gave him several areas of need that big money could more than be utilized.

So enter...............Mr and Mrs. John J. Moores who ended up giving UH $50 million which at that time was the largest individual donation ever given to a U.S. public university. And $50 million that was put in the very areas that UH officials deemed their biggest areas of need. The UH Athletic Dept. got a very nice Athletic Center out of that big donation, too.

H. R. Cullen in the mid-1950's gave UH $1 million right after the Coog's had beaten SWC'er Baylor. Heard he actually got pissed when he got word that all of his $1 million donation didn't go completely to athletics, either.

Most of you older Texans might recall that Mr. Cullen was a big Texas oil man. In fact, one of Forth Worth's most famous (and controversial) citizens was named after H.R. Cullen and that would be one T. Cullen Davis (and now you know the rest of the story)! smile.gif

People do make unrestricted gifts to UNT, the school strongly encourages it - but they are usually not in the millions of dollars. When I worked for the school more often than not those unrestricted gifts were directed to the College of Music, or to general scholarships.
