MONROE, La. (11/30/05) – Redshirt freshman Amber Jackson fueled a furious second half rally as the North Texas women’s basketball team rallied from a 16-point deficit to defeat Louisiana-Monroe 68-62 from Fant-Ewing Coliseum. Down 43-27 with 14:58 to play, the Mean Green (4-1) used a 13-0 run to climb back in the game.

Jackson, who ended the game with a team-high 15 points, scored 11 of her 15 points in the second half.

“I was really proud of the way that we came from behind and never gave up,” said North Texas head coach Tina Slinker. “I thought that DiDi (Wali) came in and gave us a spark when we needed it on the defensive end”.

Louisiana-Monroe extended their lead back to seven points at 49-42 with less than 10 minutes to play, but North Texas continued to chip away. Junior Mia Ajekwu, who had a season-high 13 points, scored four straight points to tie the game at 56-56 with 2:36 remaining.

The Indians (3-2) regained the lead at 58-56, but Ajekwu answered with a basket to knot the game up at 58-58.

North Texas took their first lead of the game since the first half at 61-60 with 57 seconds left when Jackson converted a 3-point play.

Louisiana-Monroe missed a 3-point shot on their next possession and two free throws by Mian Williams made it a 63-60 North Texas with 34 seconds remaining.

Aishie Banks scored with 5.6 left to cut the Mean Green lead to 64-62, but Jackson iced the game for North Texas with two free throws with 4.7 seconds.

“This is really a great comeback for us especially on the road. This is going to give us a lot of momentum heading into Saturday” Slinker said.

The win gives the Mean Green its best start at 4-1 since the 2000-01 season.

North Texas returns home where they will square off with metroplex rival SMU on December 3 to begin a three-game homestand.

I had done the same. I had the game really low in the background as I was watching the Stars on TV and had the men's game on my other radio. When I heard that they were on a 7-0 run I muted the Stars, turned down the men's game and started listening to the women again. Turned out to be the best game of the 3.

I was sort of flipping my internet audio between our 2 games while I had the Duke/IU game on mute. I ended up only paying attention to the women's game for at least 35 minutes or so. When we took the lead with about a minute to go I was in shock. I could not believe we stole that one.

The women could have a special season.
