Look at the characteristics broken out by top5/bottom5. Supports athletics is UNANIMOUSLY in the bottom 5--and in most cases is #1 (or DEAD LAST!)....even in the Alumni/Friends section....if only 720 identified themselves in this category (what most on this board would have done), I have a HARD time believing that the ranking was so low....unless there was a group of people who all ranked it dead last....

What I also thought was crazy was that "Supports UNT's renewed emphasis on an active residential campus" ranked in the bottom 5 for Student responses. Apparently we surveyed a bunch of commuters???!?!?!

I hate these kinds of surveys....to easy to manipulate. I hope Bobby Ray sticks to what he said...and doesn't allow us to hire someone who would match these "stats"...

I completed the survey, ranked athletics a high priority in every question available, and added comments to every page how athletics helps the university.

BY the way, our BOR will keep in mind that this so called "UNT COMMUNITY" that filled out this survey, only consisted of about 4,000 respondents.

Meaning what?...that nobody really cares anyway so they have free reign?...or was this a positive comment? smile.gif

This just further proves the point that (AS A WHOLE - NOT HERE), we have some of the most disconnected, non-invested alumni in the state.

Why expect them to attend sporting events when most do not even care about the agenda and direction of the entire freaking school!!!???? mad.gif

Who's to say that someone called themselves a "UNT alum" when in fact they were some dufus from MTSU pulling a prank and putting athletics as dead last? This survey has absolutely no credibility unless you're verifying "anonymous" entries...

Question: How did alumni find out about this survey? Was one mailed out?

Answers: Unless you log on to gmg.com or go to unt.edu every so often, you would never know. Question #2 is no.

If they, LJ, wanted a true picture, this would have been mailed out to every faculty member, student and alumni.

So true, The survey is BS. If they really wanted accurate opinions they'd solicite more survey results, and not stop until they got the number they think portrays an accurate picture. Not someone voting their opinion on 100 different machines. They'd pass out surveys in classrooms and get a much more accurate reading I think. For the most part, I think the majority students want to see the athletic program do well.

I got it emailed to me - as I think many others did along with all of the North Texas Insider stuff. If only people from here or who check the website voted, we really are in trouble.

Yes the methodology is a bust and they should be embarrassed for how they did this, but I think this still reflects poorly on everyone involved. Our university as a whole has an apathy/ loyalty/ pride problem and this is, in some way, a reflection of that.

Did not mean to come off as defending the survey itself...it's an insult to anyone who has studied stats/methodology.

Voted, but the questions were skewed and there was little about athletics in the survey. Furthermore, the school (again) did a crap-tacular job of letting people know about the survey.

This reminds me of the "survey" supposedly conducted the year before the new logos were designed. The admin said that a "sampling" of students was taken or some BS like that.

I participated twice in the survey from my work e-mail and my home e-mail. I know many others involved with ahtletics who also did. As I have told every regent I know if you let this faculty gain control of the administration with a puppet President, NT as a whole will be set back decades and athletics in particular may never be competitive again. I fear the worst is coming to pass, but I guess we have to wait and see. Remember LJ said HE would submit one or more names to the BOR from the search committee. Wanna bet it's just one---and most likely HIS.

I fully expect a candidate with an SMUt background submitted by him. dry.gif

IF IT LOOKS LIKE A SKUNK, SMELLS LIKE A SKUNK, SPRAYS LIKE A SKUNK THEN..........IT MUST BE OUR PRESENT UNT LEADERSHIP AT THE TOP? blink.gif (Would our bespeckled Chancellor possibly have his hit squad to skew the results of "HIS" survey to meet his personal agenda)?!?!?!? ph34r.gifohmy.gifunsure.gifwink.gifsad.gifdry.gif

Dallas Green, I also emailed a filled out survey with (yall know me by now) a "short" over-view as to why athletics is important to a school like UNT that has such a pitiful and piss-poor financial endowment that we need to get national recognition somehow--why not D1-A Top 25 football? tongue.gifBeggin' my pardon to our NT College of Music who have made us all proud, but one Sunday SportsPage write-up of any Mean Green football game will command more ink than yall will get in one full year--sorry, but thats the way it is, trombone section fellas'. Of course with the survey, I was a bit more diplomatic with my written content than I am on GMG.com where I let it all hang out as some of you have told me. (insert a Sylvestor the Cat "I just got caught" grin). smile.gif

Gut feeling with Lee Jackson from the git-go has always been that he is a red and blue bespeckled snake in the grass that our main campus in Denton will ultimately suffer because of (#1) his personally being selected for the Chancellor job by (who the hell else) one Bobby Ray............ and (#2) with the charge by Mr. Ray for LJ do whatever it takes to get UNT-Dallas into a free standing status.

Remember how one GoMeanGreen.com poster reported that Bobby Ray said last Saturday that we (he?) are getting "no-where" with any progress for funds for a new football stadium at UNT-Denton/ Eagle Point Campus? Well.............. blink.gif duh...........what other red flags do we as NT Exes need to observe to possibly understand why?

Where will Texas and DFW area Fortune 500 companies be asked by Chancelor "no Phd" Lee Jackson to divert the really Big Bucks? Perhaps (and just maybe) to the Mean Green Athletic Village out at Eagle Point Campus for a new football stadium? Yeah right, all indications now are that day will come closer to happening when a Darrell Dickey-led NT football team wins a football game outside the SBC/Bottom 10 or beats a 4'th place CUSA team in a bowl (which we may not see for awhile now). Anyway, Chancellor "no-Phd." Lee Jackson (of Dallas, Texas) will by assignment from B. Ray put about 100% of his time and emphasis at the south Dallas county campus (and what would ordinarily be fund-raising monies that could go to UNT-Denton will be diverted to a south Dallas County campus that is having a very difficult time now getting any significant numbers of students.

THIS WAS THE ICING ON THE CAKE FOR THIS NT EX CONCERNING UNT-DALLAS; Anyone else think it funny (maybe even more sad) that some of our best known NT Ex football players from the Mean Joe Greene era of the laste 1960's have a golf tourney each year to raise monies for, uh, well............... UNT-Dallas? HELLO! ANYBODY ELSE OUT THERE SEEING EVEN MORE RED FLAGS WITH A BOBBY RAY LED UNT!?!?!?!? ph34r.gif

Of course, a part of the monies some of the best players to ever play college football anywhere who put on this annual golf tourney receives some KUDO's as part of what they raise goes to a cause for a friend to many of us, ie, the Ron Shanklin Scholarship Fund. But dad gum it, why haven't those guys thru all the years done something (similar) for the main campus in Denton from where they received their own scholarships and the very campus where they played the game of college football? ? ? ? huh.gif

Bobby Ray? smile.gif You know that NCAA D1-A collegiate sports management prodigy and guru who along with NT lifetime employee and his Boy, Darrell Dickey will (after they work all their magic) have us in NCAA Division II (not even 1-AA); that is by the time Mr. Ray finishes gracing us with all his decision-making abilties which hopefully is 2007. And for sure, he really is a successful businessman? blink.gif ?

CAN'T STOP LAUGHING OVER THIS ONE: While on the subject or our Napoleon of the North, aren't we all proud to hear that his grandson is on the Mean Green varsity basketball team, albeit sitting on the pine? Mr. Ray, I have a nephew who can shoot the eye out of the basket with those NBA range 3 pointers who plays at a high school out in east Texas, can we give him a try-out with Coach Jones as to where he would make the team, even if its just sitting on the bench? ph34r.gif Man oh man..........only at UNT, right? ph34r.gif

Folks, with all that is now coming to surface with the very people we have trusted to effectively (and successfully) run the 4'th largest "PUBLIC" (sorry Lee O' Boy) university in the state of Texas, these are just not the best of time for our alma mater IMO.

EVEN SADDER? THE NT COMMUNITY OBVIOUSLY SLUMBERS (once again, just as we did when DD was pushed upon us by the KSU boys)..........YET WE ALL SLEEP WHILE ALL THE TIME WE ARE STILL ALLOWING OUR OWN LEADERS TO HAVE THEIR WAY WITH US. (Hopefully someone didn't forget to bring along the, uh, KY). blink.gif

GOD BLESS TEXAS!

I did as well. But as said above the survey was set up in such a way that athletics did not have a chance, there were only one or two questions that related to athletics. I did add some comments that said athletics were the most important part for me as an alumni. Any survey can and usually are set up to find out the results the surveyors want to prove.

Bloody thing was rigged.

Or badly assembled, at best.

Don't get me wrong, I think academics are of top importance, but right behind...almost right on the butt of academics are athletics. Why? Athletics provides two really important things for the school: Publicity and Revenue.

Academics is fine, but we're not a private school, so in order to get the funds to really scale it up and bring in kids, a great way to get attention is TV time with athletics. Basically said, it's assumed that a school with good athletics is also strong in academics. Many college athletes don't go professional, so they know that a school that's strong with their degree.

Athletics and Academics go hand-in-hand, so there's no reason why athletics should be just dropped by the wayside. We know UNT can get by as an academics school. It's got more than the needed potential to become a school that has power in athletics and academics.

Exactly. I got it emailed to me, but only because I registered for Dr. Pohl's email. Other than that I would have only heard about it here on this board. Hell, I got a card in the mail last saturday telling me about the final home game of the year. I got a card the day of homecoming telling me about homecoming? If they wanted a true feeling of what the people who are most concerned in supporting North Texas felt they would have had tables set up oustide the stadium during homecoming to find out what the real NT family feels is of most importance for our next president.

I have been warning y'all since the summer of '04 about some of the agenda's that some individuals have been trying to push on this school. RV, Dr. Pohl and the BOR have made some major strides in a short time. But right now we are at a crossroads with our athletic future mostly at stake. I hope my greatest fears do not fully come true. Hopefully this survey doesn't hold a lot of water when the hard, final decisions are made.

The characterization that the UNT community does not feel it is important to support the 'renewed emphasis' on competitive sports is way off. I do not even put this in the top 5 of 'vision' qualities, but I certainly do think it's important. The fact is, there are many qualities that are important.

The alarming thing is that 'knows how to market, promote and raise money' is not at the top of the list or even on the list. Nor is 'WANTS to market, promote and raise money'.

About halfway through my 'illustrious' college career, I faced the opportunity to transfer to UT. I had sort of bumbled my way to North Texas (by way of a brief and bleary stay at Mizzou no less) without any long term vision. But I decided to stay. The place was endearing. Yet seeing things like this study and the 'digestion' of it by the leadership makes me question the decision. It is clearly a mountainous task to transform North Texas, and I guess many would ask whether it should even be done. However, I don't think anything would be lost in the process, other than a reputation that has some disadvantageous aspects. I believe we could have the benefits of energized sports and support and still make a conscious and successful effort at maintaining the other endearing qualities of our school. The real mistake that some are making is that they are thinking it is an 'either/or' proposition, when really it is not a zero-sum equation.

It is important that North Texas should be a place where everyone feels comfortable. But 'everyone' does not mean just the social misfits. It is mainly important that North Texas broaden its appeal. Having this disgraceful sports reputation and apathy just guts that goal.

Dammit I just had to post again becuase the more I think about that statement about the "UNT community does not think it's important...." the more I want to PUKE.

Although it was a relatively modest crowd Saturday, you are still talking about thousands of fans out for a team that won 2 games all season. That is a voice that silences that BS interpretation.

The failure of our school is in marketing, promotion and broad-based fundraising. I'm thinking of funding my own study. I've already got some interpretations in mind too.

PUUUUUUUKE!
