The AD can provide all the resources in the world for the athletes to excel academically, but ONLY the COACHES can instill the motivation, the discipline, and the punishment for the players who fail to go to class, go to study hall, etc.

Do you think the academic people have any pull with these kids? Hell no. Some, yes...for those kids who take it seriously. But for those kids who don't, this is when you need your coaches to be the heavy...and bring the wood to these kids who aren't taking academics seriously.

Whatever they (the coaches) did last year obviously didn't work when you look at all the kids who didn't return this year. (Same with the year before).

You think coaches like Bob Knight, Mike Stoops, and others simply leave it up to the athletic dept's academic people and the players to get their grades done? Hell no...they, the coaches, are the ones who make sure their players go to class. I guarantee it.

Don't misunderstand me, we should give the players all the support we can academically, they are students. However, staying all over them to get their grades up would accomplish what? They might keep their grades up long enough to be eligible, but what have they learned? They have learned to study when someone is looking over their back but they haven't learned anything about responsibility which is the most important lesson of college and life.

Put the responsiblity on the players and they learn what? They learn it is their responsiblity and if they don't hold up their end, they let their entire team and university down. Which one do you think serves these young men better later in life? Its just basics of parenting and teaching responsibility, people have to learn the hard way (see Love and Logic).

Yes, we can baby them, constantly monitor them and have a few more eligible players that will be useless after college. As much as I want to see a winning program at North Texas, I don't think I want it at the expense of the young men coming here.

Former players have told me that the O-line coach that left to go to Arizona with Stoops brother was in charge of academics. He went around and made sure kids were in class, checking attendance records with profs. Someone has to do it. If kids know you are checking on them randomly, and know there will be penalties for non compliance, then they are more likely to conform. It has not been the same since the old O-line coach left.

Is Rick Gailey not accountable for anything either?

1. Beat SMU

2. Finish at least 2nd in SBC.

3. Beat SMU

4. Beat SMU

5. Compete with Tulsa

6. Beat LaTech in our house

7. Beat SMU

That's not just out of resentment for SMU. Until we laid such a turd this year and forfeited any recruiting advantage we had against Tulsa, LaTech, and the rest of the Belt, the SMU game would have just been a game that you want to win. Now it's a game we have to win.

Yes.  But it's probably not news to anyone that the SBC is viewed by many as a conference that could probably be won by 10 1AA schools in this country.  App. State isn't chopped liver--they've had 11 winning seasons in a row.

I know. They've got an excellent coach by the name of Jerry Moore.
