OK, now I know some of you have gone over the edge when it comes to your idolization of DD. Anyone that is seriously trying to justify that Dickey is on the same coaching level as Hayden Fry is grasping at straws. Here’s a general overview of Coach Fry’s career -

Coached SMU to Southwest Conference championship in 1966... Four-time Texas college coach of the year... coach of the year in both Southwest Conference and Missouri Valley Conferences... Big Ten Coach of the Year in 1981, 1990 and 1991... Coached his teams to 14 bowl games... 1985 national Coach of the Year by Golden Helmet Club for Seattle... 1985 James Arneberg Award for distinguished service to college football... on American Football Coaches Association board of trustees. Coached in Japan Bowl and East-West Shrine all-star games... President of AFCA in 1993-94... Coach Fry was inducted into Texas H.S. Football Hall of Fame in 1997.

If some of you want to continue to praise DD for the work he has accomplished in the Sun Belt (which to this point in its existence has been the worst 1-A conference in NCAA history) while giving him a free-pass on the teams O.O.C. performance go right ahead. But please stop trying to place DD and Fry on the same level and save some semblance of credibility.

I know I'm going to regret point out the obvious, but here goes...

First of all you are comparing Hayden's 36 years with Darrell's 8. Let's compare after 8 years.

Interestingly enough, Hayden took SMU to a bowl game with a losing record, just like Darrell. He did not turn down the that bowl game and he lost it soundly. Just like Darrell.

During Hayden's first eight years, he won his conference once. His record after 8 season's as a head coach was 33-49-1.

Season by season Hayden was:

Year Record

1962 2-8

1963 4-7

1964 1-9

1965 4-5-1

1966 8-3 - won SWC championship, lost Cotton Bowl to Georgia 24-9

1967 3-7

1968 8-3

1969 3-7

Notice Hayden only had two winning season in his first eight years. There were no back to back winning seasons.

During Darrell's first 8 years as a head coach, he won his conference four times. His record, if I did the math correctly, is about 39-54. He had a total of just three winning seasons.

Year Record

1998 3-8

1999 2-9

2000 3-8

2001 5-7

2002 8-5

2003 9-4

2004 7-5

2005 2-9

Darrell had three winning season before going backward this year.

No one is saying Darrell is as great a coach as Hayden was. But six years into his head coaching career, Darrell is not doing badly.

In his first eight years at SMU, in OOC games, Fry was 7-15-1, including 1W, 2L in bowl games. Seven wins includes 1 over a D1AA team. SMU played teams like Ohio State, some very good Navy teams back them, NC State, and others. The thing is, his teams were never really routed by the likes of Ohio State, etc. He was very competitive.
