ESPN has confirmed K-State coach Bill Snyder, seen here in a loss in 2004, has told his team he will retire.

GoPowercat.com reported Snyder told his team around 9 p.m. local time that his 17th season at Kansas State would be his last.

The Wildcats (4-6, 1-6 Big 12) will not play in a bowl for the second straight year after making a bowl in 11 straight seasons. Their final game of the season is Saturday against Missouri.

Snyder will best be remembered for taking over a moribund program and taking it to the cusp of a national title contender. The Wildcats were 1-10 record in his first season, but improved to 5-6 in 1990, 7-4 in 1991 before falling back to 5-6 again in 1992. But then came the string of 11 straight seasons to end with a bowl game.

Snyder is 135-68-1 in his 16-plus season at Kansas State.

DD picked the wrong year to not coach like a 4x Conference Champion, guess we will have him for another 20 years when the next K. State coach retires. huh.gif

If offered, couldn't DD take the job at Kansas State ? Contracts only protect the coach, not the school.

I hope he is offered and takes the job and is wildly successful.

Then I hope we get someone that is happy to be at NT and is wildly successful.

Look for the short list of K-State coaching candidates to be:

Frank Solich(Ohio)

Pat Hill(Fresno)

Gary Patterson(TCU)

Mike Price(UTEP)

Kansas State may put a feeler out or possibly even interview DD as a courtesy to his dad or the fact that he is an ex-player, but HE WILL NOT BE A SERIOUS CANDIDATE FOR THE HEAD COACHING POSITION.

hmm.  I'd say most likely candidates -

3 Frank Solich (too expensive?)

Too expensive? You think Ohio can afford him but not K-State? blink.gif Solich would jump at the chance to get back in the Big 12 and stick it to Nebraska.

I always thought Dickey would eventually goto Kansas State.  Of course I didn't expect Snyder to step down for another 7-10 years.

So there goes my theory.

Snyder wanted to make sure that DD did not take over the program laugh.giflaugh.giflaugh.gif

Until I read this, I didn't realize that North Texas was Snyder's first win at K State. They beat a Corky Nelson team in 1989 that was expected to compete for the I-AA championship and was the favorite in the game. K State hadn't won a game in three years before they beat us. They were so happy fans tore down the goalposts.
