Tony...you don't have to post your resume.  But I would seriously like to know what you have done in your past that would make you think you know more about football than Flanigan.  I'm not being a smartass,  I would really like to know.

As I remember, Ramon Flanigan was a pretty damn good quarterback at SMU.  He wasn't a Heisman winner, but he did some really nice things for a below average program.

Your point about coaches...I couldn't disagree more.  I'm not saying all coaches have a high IQ, but for the most part coaches (especially at the D1 level) are pretty intelligent people.  I'm sure there are probably a handful of 7th grade coaches that don't have a clue, but that isn't really even relevant for our discussion.

Why do you insist Flanigan knows so much? His title, his former qb experience, he's athletic, he went to Smu? I admit I don't know that much about him or his talent for his current job, just the results of the team he coaches and watching what appears to be a lot of disorganization within the offense. Again, not a flame, but you seem to put a lot of stock into just his title. He controls the worst offense in 1-A last I saw.

All the man is trying to convey is "football" men know more about the sport than we do. It does not mean that they can effectively teach it to others or implement it, just that they are exposed to it at a level of depth we generally do not enjoy. Its kind of like if Rainman had turrets and yelled out his hand as everyone bet at the table- he probably knows more about probabilities and cards than everyone around him, but it will not do him a bit of good in the real situation (ok, that analogy sucked, but try to fight through it - its late.)

I think everyone agrees the 117th best or (3rd crappiest!) offense sucks and it is not getting results. Maybe now we can euthinize this debate before catman has to come back and restart the process.

The past few years, he controlled one of the better offenses in football and his playcalling led to the national rushing champion two years straight. This season, WE SUCK!! If he is the problem this season, then he should get some of the credit for prior successes. SEEMS LIKE I'VE ALREADY SAID THAT LIKE 4 TIMES

Any of you that keep posting what a beating this is, JUST QUIT READING!! Nobody is forcing you to keep reading and posting items, but I'm enjoying hearing other peoples opinions.

Hey, I'm on your side here- but one of the better offenses in football? Check FFR's post on our rank the last 5 years on that one...

That's the part of your argument that seems to bring about the flaming.

Just my contribution to the "fun"

Yes, the "football?" men are into it at a deeper level than just us fans are. All we fans know is the results we see. 2-6 and 7-42 are not good results according to my NT education.

We may have had the best runners based on games played, in a very weak schedule but we have never had one of the better offenses!! laugh.giflaugh.giflaugh.giflaugh.gif

Prior successes and better offenses in football...during which of the 42 non-conference losses would that have been? huh.gif

Or maybe it is just DD's offense and this just the parameters that DD lets RF work with.

DING, DING, DING!!

This offense was EVEN MORE BORING in the years before RF got here. I have NO idea how much RF is influencing our play-calling, but we're throwing more passes and have thrown more plays/formations out in the last 2-3 years than we ever did when it was just DD....remember when we literally had 4 different plays to choose from?...if you switched the play's direction (Strong, weak) we had 8. Seriously, does NOBODY else remember those days???

Oh, and just so I cover all my bases: SMU stinks. RF came from SMU. You know where I stand? tongue.gif

Bienvenidos, El Guapo.  Long time no see.

El Guapo is ashamed business has kept him away from making all of the games this year, banditry is booming! El Guapo thinks maybe this is why the winning streak has ended?

El Guapo will see you all at Homecoming!

I love people who think coaching football or any sport for that matter is akin to nuclear science. I would NEVER say that I could dismantle a nuclear bomb, in fact if I EVER saw one I would run screaming!

Coaching football and most sports isn't that difficult. It isn't like it is really that complicated. A weekend never goes by that I don't get a huge laugh out of some call that an idiot coach commits to either in college or pro football. Basketball is even worse when a coach continues to foul in the last minute when his team is down by 40. Coach, the game is OVER!

Coaching a sport isn't that hard. Sorry. ANYBODY can do it.

However, the truly GREAT coaches excel at everything. Give them a class to teach and they will make it the best experience they can. They don't half ass anything. GREAT coaches know how to communicate, motivate, and organize. And this is true in any profession. I have always thought that the truly great coaches can hire the right people for their staffs and can then effectively delegate to those people. There aren't many out there that can do that. That is WHY SO MANY OF THEM GET FIRED EVERY YEAR.

If you looked at the truly great ones, they spawn future head coaches off of their staffs. And I mean head coaches that can go out and be successful on their own. Bill Walsh comes to mind.
