There is no possible way this can be excused, D1 coaches SHOULD be able to do as college and professional do; ignore the fans. that simple. i would expect this in high school or something. he needs to lose his job this time around.

A few posters on here that are high school coaches might take offense to that............I can't imagine it being acceptable under any condition at any level.

Welcome Wideout. Youre right there is no excuse for that type of action from a coach. I believe that he should be suspended for a game and then released at the end of the season. Not only because of this but many other things. How he has handled the offense and recruiting. DD will not be let go after this season, but RF will be, as a message to the rest of the staff and the players so that they know that this season was unacceptable.

RF and Silver, IMHO, should find time to get together and shake hands and end this before it gets totally out of hand.....I could respect both men for doing this for the good of UNT!!!

If it is not done then it is for the detriment of UNT and only for self gratification!!

There is nothing wrong in saying, "I made a mistake will you forgive me."

After my previous tongue-in-cheek post, it occurred to me that RF is not totally to blame. Who has mentored him for several years? Who may have helped him form a disdain for fans? Who has been a role model for the rising young coach?

Yeah, you're right!!

I agree with Zeke, this is unacceptable at any level. As a matter of fact, if a high school coach (who most of the time also teaches many of the students on the field and in the stands) did this exact thing, they probably would have already been released of their coaching responsibilities. The school I am at now had a bad season last year, and the coaches took a lot of abuse from the stands. Let's just say that it was much harsher, vulgar, and personal than "you are being outcoached". None of them charged into the stands threatening anyone.

You know that it will happen when you get into coaching, and when fans yell at us, it makes me smile to myself more than become angry. The fans don't spend all the hours that we do carefully planning each and every thing. So I don't take what they say seriously. However, I know that part of what fans do is second guess coaches and I am fine with it...I do when I watch games on TV. It is part of the fun. There are fans that take it too far, and a coach should ignore them and not stoop to their level. I don't think Silver took it too far, but even if he or someone else would have, what Flanigan did was very unprofessional and makes me embarassed as a coach.

Thanks for welcoming me guys. Yeah Dickey cant go all the sudden due to the fact that hes turned this program around a complete 180. Ramon yes, dickey not yet... lets see how it goes next year.

So, "Coach", how do we handle fans who take it too far?

Where is the line?

In my opinion, when you buy a ticket, you have not purchased the right to abuse anyone.

So, where is the line and what can we do?

What can you say to a coach during a game?

Where is the line?

The line is making it personal, making threats, or using profanity or objectionable language.

In my opinion, when you buy a ticket, you have not purchased the right to abuse anyone.

Please re-read my post. I said fans second guessing coaches is part of the game, and no matter what any fan says, a coach should not react the way Flanigan did. If you are who I think you are, I am very suprised that you would disagree with that.

So, where is the line and what can we do?

I don't know how that should be handled, perhaps being escorted from the game or being warned before doing so, but I do know that the WORST way to handle it is for a coach to come into the stands and threaten someone.

Coach,

I agree with everything you said.

I just think some make it very personal and many don't know where the line is anymore, so I understand a coach being overly sensitive.

For example, I had a parent / fan cut all four tires on my truck after a game last year after I took her son out of a game. I have also been attacked after a game and I have had parents throw things at me during a game... and these events occured at different schools.

RF was wrong. No doubt. I just wanted us remember that it is a game.

Both parties are wrong. Ramon is more at fault for his actions. But, why in the world, if you are a fan of the team, would you heckle your own coaching staff? Not saying that you don't have the right, but why?

Ramon gave a sincere apology (unlike TO and his WWE agent). It's time to put this thing to bed.

Heckle? rolleyes.gif

Please don't ever visit an SEC or pro game. If you think someone stating "We're getting outcoached" is heckling, which means to harrass someone, then you may be in for a shock.

Silver has put this behind him. The department DID exactly what he asked for them to do and Ramone DID just that, give a public apology. We all will put it this past us and go on. But every time one of you post something that insists on, or gives hint to, that SE did something WRONG, I'll simply keep reminding you that he didn't.

Carry on.

OK. I'm not a child. I am never shocked at fan behavior anymore, even at good ole UNT.

Just a difference of opinion between us. I believe that your passion should be directed FOR your own team unless you believe that they are not putting forth the effort.

No, I agree with you on that last part and I would imagine Silver would too. He truly didn't believe our offensive coach's were "putting forth the effort" and stated "We're getting out coached".

"SARCASM ALERT"

That goofy Silver, always' stating the obvious. Who does he think we are, CHILDREN?

OK let me ask you this UNT86, right, a fan doesnt reserve the right to "abuse"(heckle) when they buy a ticket BUT. As a PAID, EMPLOYED, person, a coach is supposed to be PROFESSIONAL enough to ignore the stuff from the crowd, that is part of being professional and classy. Look at games where players and coaches are heckled WAY worse than "you are being outcoached" Hell, that is said half the time on ESPN!!! Should Chris Berman be strangled??? thank you.

I'm glad someone pointed out that there are people PAID to criticize coaches/players. The ESPN College Game Day people often criticize coaches for bonehead plays/actions/remarks all the time. I just don't see how what SilverEagle is any different then if a sports analyst on TV said the exact same thing.

TV analysts may tell their audience that a team may be getting outcoached. But they do not yell from the booth/sideline to the coach that he is being outcoached.

Ramon did something very foolish and I am sure that it will not happen again. And by no means am I blaming SE in any way. But you never know how someone may react when emotions are running high. The coaches are even more frustrated with this season than anyone on this board.

Oh come on!

All last week we were told by people on this board to not criticize unless we were willing to tell it to their faces. Now you are saying NOT to say anything because you never know how they will act? Oh my.

If you ask me which is more damning, I would say being on TV and saying the team is outcoached is WAY worse than a lone grey haired dude telling you at a game... But that is just me. It is easier to handle SE than a group of pundits on the television.

This is a good point. I think the coaches are trying they are just a little to bull headed in their way of thinking. What is the definition of insanity? Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results? The guys are working hard. I haven't seen any giving up. What I don't like about the coaching staff has nothing to do with effort only philosophy.

On a lighter note. Lets all wear boxing gloves to the game on the 19th. That would be funny.

I guess I have a different opinion than those who posted last week. I just find it funny that we are having the discussion of an altercation between a Mean Green fan and a Mean Green coach on GoMeanGreen.com. Kind of ironical wink.gif
