North Texas defeats UL Lafayette 3-2 in first round action

Courtesy: Sun Belt Conference

MOBILE, Ala. - No. 8 seed Louisiana-Lafayette had the early momentum, but No. 1 seed North Texas proved to be too much as the Mean Green (14-3-2, 8-1 SBC) claimed a 3-2 win over the Ragin’ Cajuns (4-10-3, 2-6-1 SBC) in the first round of the 2005 Aéropostale Sun Belt Conference Soccer Championships on the campus of the University of South Alabama.

UL Lafayette struck first as Erika Saffer knocked in a goal five minutes into the first half.

UNT’s Julie Radford evened the match when UL Lafayette goalkeeper Stephanie Weston misplayed an attempt to clear out. Radford intercepted Weston’s pass and drove in a goal from 10 yards out.

The Mean Green took the lead ten minutes later when Dani Slavonic netted a goal.

Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year Heather Hutyra added another goal for UNT with an assist from Brittany Cleveland.

The Ragin’ Cajuns fought hard the whole match and Erin Thompson added another goal for UL Lafayette with 15 minutes remaining in the match.

North Texas settled in on defense the rest of the match and denied UL Lafayette the upset.

UNT will next play tomorrow at 4 p.m. versus the winners of today’s match between No. 4 seed Denver and No. 5 Western Kentucky.

MOBILE, Ala. – No. 5 seed Western Kentucky broke open a scoreless tie with a goal by Alicia Dalby at the 53 minute mark and never looked back against No. 4 seed Denver in first round action at the 2005 Aéropostale Sun Belt Conference Soccer Championship on the campus of South Alabama.

The win avenged an earlier season loss for WKU (7-9-3, 4-4-1 SBC) at the hands of Denver (8-9-2, 5-3-1 SBC). The two teams faced off last Sunday in a match that saw the Pioneers come out on top 1-0.

The Lady Toppers advance to face top seeded North Texas (14-3-2, 8-1 SBC) at 4:00 p.m. Thursday.

Couple of interesting tidbits off the Cajun board.

1.For the Ragin' Cajuns, the match marked the seventh time in school history that UL faced North Texas. The Mean Green are still perfect against the Cajuns.

2.UL scored two goals on UNT for the first time in school history.
