North Texas Captures The Sun Belt Conference Title With A 4-1 Victory

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (10/28/05) – For the second consecutive season the North Texas women’s soccer team has won the Sun Belt Conference regular season title. Powered by two goals from freshman Kelli Lunsford the Mean Green (13-2-2, 8-0) blew past Western Kentucky 4-1 to win for the eighth straight time and win the conference championship outright.

North Texas extended its unbeaten streak to 15 straight games and will be the top seed at the Sun Belt Conference Tournament when it begins next week.

Sophomore Heather Hutyra started the scoring off for the Mean Green with her conference leading 17th goal of the season in the 31st minute to make it 1-0 North Texas. Lunsford quickly made it 2-0 for the Mean Green three minutes later with her sixth goal of the year.

Western Kentucky (6-8-3, 4-3-1) cut the North Texas lead to 2-1 in the 40th minute of play as Jeanna Silverberg beat goalkeeper Kandice Ellis. The goal ended the career-long scoreless streak by Ellis at 405 minutes of play.

North Texas came out strong in the second half as junior Kristen Campbell extended the North Texas lead to 3-1 just three minutes into the second half with her seventh goal of the year.

Lunsford put the game away for good with her second goal of the night in the 61st minute to make it 4-1 North Texas. Freshman Brittany Cleveland had two assists on the night as Angela Hawkins and Hutyra added the other assists.

Ellis made eight saves on the night as the Mean Green was out-shot 17-11 by the Lady Toppers.

North Texas closes out the regular season on Sunday with a road game at Middle Tennessee.
