I know many of you are bored with winning the conference championship 4 times in a row. Looking back at the media guide, we've only won 9 championships in the last 40 years. And 2 of those should have an asterisk as they were a while in 1AA purgatory.

A team must be able to win their conference before they can look to bigger goals. This year, that is going to be a tough thing to do. But, unless you do that, the out of conference games really don't matter.

I'll point out we upset Texas Tech several times while losing the conference. Those upsets got us a lot of great publicity on the Sunday after, but longer term did nothing to improve the program by getting folks to donate money to build the facilities needed to build the team.

Yet, our first conference win followed by a New Orleans Bowl lose, caused the first significant upward jump in donations since Hayden's time. And, that was with a 5-7 final record.

There's no way to say being blown out by LSU was not bad. Nor the loses to K State, La Tech or Tulsa. But if we had won all of them, we'd still be 2-1 in conference and needing more wins to be have chance of a bowl game.

You don't understand- OOC games and Conf championships are part of the package we need for respect. Each one alone isn't enough to give us a foothold on a different bowl bid or different conference.

Winning the SBC but losing to everyone OOC says that UNT is just a SBC bully but can't compete with anyone else.

If we won Tulsa/La Tech/KState, then lost SBC, then we'd be a team that COULD be great, but isn't consistent enough to do it on a regular basis.

But winning OOC and SBC says we can dominate a conference and be consistent while ALSO being strong enough to nail the kids down the street and some of the big kids, too.

I would gladly take all wins in OOC and no conference wins. It is false reality to win a SBC Championship and not beat anyone outside conference and think we are among the 1-A elite. Our goals have to be higher.

I wouldn't. The last thing I want attached to my school's football team is the "fluke win" moniker.

hmmm interesting, we would be 4-7? With wins over Tulsa at home, a ranked LSU on the road, Kansas St on the road, LA Tech on the road...tempting...especially if this is the rebuilding year...

If we would win conference AND the bowl game that is what we should be doing, getting outcoached by the likes of Memphis and Southern Mississippi badly is not acceptable for a program that is supposed to be building (and that is not saying anything against the coaches of those 2 strong programs, but rather a benchmark for where we should be)

If either of these scenarios really panned out, people on this board would be in ab uproar. Things would be complete chaos, and more people would be calling for DD's head than ever before.

If NT won a couple of OOC games and lost a couple of Belt games, you would think a regional Bowl would come calling??? I think it would happen.

Ok, I'll bite. What regional bowl? Ft Worth is tied to Mtn West and Big 12. They want TCU unless the Frogs are invited to a much better bowl. If it's TCU, then the certainly don't want a team from 30 miles away.

Independence, Houston, Alamo and Sun bowls are all tied to other conferences as well.

We aren't likely to go to a bowl other than New Orleans unless the start align perfectly. Now, last year that happened so a bunch of teams that in a normal year would have sat at home got to go bowling. Teams like Troy and the last three MAC teams don't make it even though they got 6 wins most years.

I don't think a win over LSU, Kansas State, Tulsa at home, or even La Tech would upset anyone. A win over ULL just doesn't mean as much as it used to (as if it ever did). tongue.gif
