Here's some more really surprising stats:

North Texas leads the league in fewest penalties/game (12.4) AND penalty yards/game (105.8).

North Texas is one turnover lost (8) behind MTSU and ASU (9) for the least giveaways in the belt.

North Texas is six tenths of a point from tying ASU for the second fewest points given up in the conference with 27.6/game.

North Texas has more players with interceptions than anyone in the belt (7). Monroe, MTSU, and ASU all have six.

North Texas is second in turnovers forced (16) behind Monroe with 20.

North Texas is tied for first in the conference in turnover margin with a +7.

In closing:

Really good defense, really bad offense. Lots of turnovers forced, not very many given away. Lots of yards given up, not many points given up. This sound familiar to anyone?

27.6 points per game is not good.

Really good defense,... Lots of yards given up, not many points given up.

54 points to Tulsa and Kansas State each. That is a lot of points.

All of this is compared to other teams in the Sun Belt, Lifer, the championship of which is the only thing we're playing for right now.

Just comparing us to teams we're in the same league as, literally and figuratively.

I was surprised by the penalty yds being so low, I am guessing we just have 15 yarders at the most inopportune times, b/c it seems like it should be higher.

Me too. I'd have figured we'd be leading the league in MOST penalties, but I'm starting to think maybe that was the green-colored goggles.

Nice rosey outlook.

We have MTSU, Tulsa, Troy and FIU games with TERRIBLE fouls.

We have one game with abnormally low -- in which we got blown out anyway.

That is how we are lowest in the league.

Here's a better way to compare ourselves to our SBC mates. By looking at all of the stats instead of just pulling some out that are ranked 1 or 2 out of a whopping EIGHT terrible teams:

Here are my not so surprising stats(national rank may differ from the number in the conference charts when adding FAU and FIU):

NT is 7th in the SBC(113 in nation) in Punt return avg at 3.83 yards

NT is 8th in the SBC(119th in nation) in total offense at 203 yards per game.

NT is 7th in the SBC(91st in nation) in rushing offense at 111 yards per game.

NT is 8th in the SBC(117th in nation) in passing offense at 92 yards per game.

NT is 8th in the SBC(117th in nation) in 3rd down conversion % at 23.3 %.

NT is 8th in SBC(115th in nation) in passing efficiency at 84.62 %.

NT is 8th in SBC(118th in nation) in scoring average at 9.2 points per game.

Really good defense? Are you kidding me?

Rushing defense is #110 in the nation giving up 213 yards per game

Passing defense is #45 in the nation giving up 204 yards per game

Total defense is #94 in the nation giving up 418 yards per game

Pass efficiency defense is #102 in the nation at 144.14%

Scoring defense is #78 in the nation giving up 27.6 points per game

Tackles for loss is #109 in the nation with 4.4 per game

3rd down defense is #98 in the nation allowing 44.1 %

4th down defense is # 110 in the nation allowing 80%

Mind you we have posted these stellar defensive stats playing against:

MTSU(111th in offense)

Tulsa(49th in offense)

Kansas State(73rd in offense)

Troy(109th in offense)

FIU(64th in offense)

Is that your idea of a good defense?

I'd be most interested to see where we rank in the "good decision making" category...both by the coaching staff and players, broken out by team and individual statistics.

The problem with that is everything is subjective and outcome based. Case in point, during the USC – ND game since USC scored it was a great decision, but if they don’t score it would have been considered on of the biggest mistakes ever.

Relative to the offense, yes. Forcing 8 turnovers in a game is quite an accomplishment. Being plus seven on the year is great, and we're pretty good in scoring defense, relative to our conference of similarly-skilled teams.

However, if your criteria is the rest of college football, then you're totally right. As I've said all along, I'm looking at conference numbers.

Those are some stellar numbers considering 2 of the schools in the SBC are provisional 1-A members.

The problem with that 1 loss is that NT, Troy, MUTS, and ASU have 1 loss and LaMo has 0 losses.

It could play out as such:

LaMo: If they beat MUTS and lose to us and then win the rest they will have 1 loss.

NT: Win out and we have 1 loss

Troy: Win out and they have 1 loss.

The above scenario would leave 3 teams with 1 loss in conference and all bowl eligible. If 2 or more teams are tied for first place at the end of the season, the Belt chooses who goes bowling and you can rest assured that it won't be us.

96, I don't know any other way to say it so I'll just say it again.

Forcing 8 turnovers in a game is quite an accomplishment. Being plus seven on the year is great, and we're pretty good in scoring defense.

Of course you see a lot of yardage. We've ALWAYS been a bend not break defense, and at our best, we still gave up TONS of yardage between the twenties. That seems to be the trend, and this year is no exception.

Throw in how much our D is on the field because our offense is constantly 3 and out. Then you have to recognize who we gave up all the points to. K-State and Tulsa. Everyone wants to say it's only Tulsa, but Tulsa is in the drivers seat to win C-USA. They have an excellent team and remember they barely lost at OU.
