Let me start off by saying that in the company I work for I am responsible to ensure that I have my people crossed trained and have a back up plan for every position. That does not mean the back up is as good as the primary person, but if they need to step in they are experienced.

That being said, our lack of experience this year is not a surprise – it was mentioned last night that we have something like 23 or 24 people who have played this year with no previous 1-A experience, we knew it was coming. I realize that the most pressing thing is to win now, but what responsibility does the coaching staff have to make sure the lack of experience does not impact the team they way it is this year?

I beleive the 20 plus playing with no previous 1A experience being referred to are r/s freshmen, freshmen, and JC transfers.

That raises the question – this is not a new coach or a program that has not been successful. I’m not saying were at the point where we can “reload” but with DD’s success the last 4 years why do we have to count on so many inexperienced players?

I suppose those 23/24 are more from the defensive side of things. If so, and I believe they are, our defense played it's ass off to hold Troy to 13 points after playing in 76 plays on the night.

As I have stated earlier, our current offense has players with over 140 starts and over 151 games played in. That is fact, not an estimate or a guess, but fact. I can sit here and list every player and every start or game they played in by their listing on meangreensports.com and in the media guide.

The major failing was that last year, our other QBs saw almost NO playing time. It's hard to get good performance from a QB who hasn't had field time. It's about the same as expecting a new soldier to fight as hard and as long as a veteran- it just doesn't happen. Even OU, with its resources, is having trouble with Rhett Bomar.

Dickey's gonna have to get smarter about reps for younger players, period.

That is a lot easier said than done! Which games last year were we so comfortably ahead that we could just sit Scott down and say let the kid take it. We don't care if he's ineffective or worse yet, throws an interception.

It's not just us with this problem. You pointed out that OU has the same problem. Plus, most NFL teams also have the same problem with getting a young player experience. Usually it's at the end of a game with a VERY big lead or in a pre-season game.

Such an interesting discussion going on here but who exactly was DD to have put in? Bylerly? yeah, he should have played him more. But hindsight being 20/20 we know it wouldn't have mattered if he did. Meager? We would have had to burn his redshirt (perhaps this is worth it?) Phillips was planning his Prom.
