Although he's kind of being a butt about it, I kinda agree with Silver Eagle on this one. I'm sick of walking around campus seeing UT and A&M shirts. As far as I'm concerned you can be a UNT and a Rutgers fan, or an SMU and Washington fan, but you can't be a UNT and UT or Tech fan. Its different if you got one degree from one school and another from the other, but this whole pulling for two schools within 4 hours of each other is silly.

---I am a North Texas grad (twice) and an obvious fan... BUT I am a Texan as well. I always cheer for teams from Texas (not SMU). I am not jealous of other Texans or threatened by them. I always think that the better other Texas teams look the better we look. I have never understood how Texans can cheer for Nebraska or whoever over a Texas team unless they have some connection to that university. I can't help it if others are too ignorant to realize we are a well recognized major university in many fields.

---Regarding that UNT brag link....there are lots of info left off..... UNT has the largest business school in the state so I read lately. My son from UNT is computer science grad.... UNT was in the first group of colleges in America accredited for computer science. Every school has braggging points but we have more than most.

---In athletics we still struggling for recognition largely because for MANY YEARS we and UTEP were the only major colleges in Texas not in the SWC. It takes time but we are getting there and getting more recognition. One of the most successful people on TV now is Dr. Phil... who has two NT degrees. NT alums has more emmys than other university (includes Juliard) and we are the only University to have received an Emmy nomination ( we have twice). Acounting majors from many colleges in the state come to UNT to take a prep course before taking their state CPA exams... We have a lot to proud of.

This is going to be worked on and extended into a bigger project than just on the web site. You'll see more information in the future with every student having a "battle sheet" that will tell them how good a university UNT is. My recommendation is it should be small and can be carried in the wallet or purse like the football schedule. I know for a fact that there is a project being put in place by the NT Exes BOD to look into this. It was a main point of emphasis of mine at our last meeting, what I called "water cooler talk". Our students/alum need to win these water cooler battles. If we win enough of these confrontations we'll begin to turn the perception that is out there.

I'll keep everyone updated on the progress.

I was at the new Wal Mart in Hudson Oaks (near Weatherford, Texas) today and even saw a display that "only' had OU stuff and I was wondering which buyer (who obviously went to OU or was a Sooner) got a big laugh out of having that sent to a Texas-based Wal Mart 3 hours away from Norman? rolleyes.gif

Many times we really are at the mercy of these retail buyers who have no idea that NORTH TEXAS has a much larger customer purchasing demographic than many of the old SWC schools and for sure, some non-Texas mid-major schools of which many times you will even see their gear in DFW stores.

Some of you have gone thru the "dog and pony' some of these area retailers give us when we ask "why don't you have any NT gear?" My take on this and what I have told some of these DFW merchants (as I know some of you have) is when I tell the sales attendant "nothing personal" but you and your store just lost a sale today because the powers that be of this store thought it more prudent to stock gear from Marshall U, Rice U, Iowa State, Slippery Rock U and others who have about 1/10'th the Metroplex purchasing power as the University of North Texas constituency. ohmy.gif

Yes.  I'm sure ALL UNT fans are REAL FANS.  rolleyes.gif  I grew up in Denton County, and spent most of my high school hangout days in Denton.  And lived there.  And was born at Flow back when it was a hospital.  But I am an alum of Texas.  Am I a REAL Texas fan?  Can I be a UNT fan too?  A REAL one??  laugh.gif

I will not be such an ass....and I will run for cover after I am done.

The more the merrier.

I was in your situation reversed. I grew up in Austin. Spent most of my younger days going to UT football and basketball games. Lived there for for a long time. I loved UT. Parents moved to Dallas, went to UNT because it was convenient. I started going to some games and love UNT now. Just because I am a North Texas fan doesn't mean I am not a huge Texas fan. I guess you could call Texas my "pet" school as someone else put it, but they really aren't. If My folks hadn't moved I'd be at UT. I don't understand why this isn't okay with people on this board. Does this make me a fake UNT fan? If going to every home game but 2 or 3 since I started school at UNT makes me a fake UNT fan, I'm fine with that. I bet you are too, because it looks better on TV when I'm there. (and yes I am that good looking) I am a REAL UNT fan, right? I am also a REAL Texas fan, no? There has never been any animosity between UNT and Texas. Never any rivalry. I do not go around wearing UT stuff on campus anymore, nor do I have a problem with some of my friends who do. They still come to the UNT games. Hell, they even go to different Denton area highschool games every Friday night.

So it's okay for folks to be a Texan, cheer for both a Texas school and one that is outside of Texas that doesn't receive taxes and such from other Texans? Screw that, I want those Washington people and Ohio State people and California people to know that Texas is better than every single one of them. I hate A&M, TTech, but if they're playing against any college from state other than Texas, I'll pull for the Texas school.

I'll take any type of fan to no fan, and you people should do the same and not be so obtuse about the matter.

Th guy on Fox Sports Southwest at the half of the OU game just called us North Texas State....

You mean FSN's good ol' sports broadcaster, ie, Herbal Oglethorpe called us, uh, North Texas State? blink.gif Oh, excuse me, that wasn't his name, either, now was it? rolleyes.gif

In Texas, where there are 10 NCAA D1-A schools, any Lone Star State or Southwest region sports media type who can read and understand English as our spoken language should have a subtle clue by now that we have (in deed) been the University of North Texas now going on 3 decades (since we changed to UNT in the 80's).

If I were that FSN sports broadcaster's (does he know we're the Mean Green?) TV station boss, I might quietly pull him to the side with the revelation about the 4'th largest school in the Lone Star State (which will one day be only behind UT and TAMU in size).

All of my students know where I graduated from...the Dean knows.....the front desk staff knows (I teach at a hotel on U of A's campus)......they see my school flag in my office, my screensavers, my mouse pad......my class ring......everyone knows! Back home in North Carolina, we are proud of the college(s) we represent....brother went to Penn State.....and would never think of graduating from North Texas and being a Texas fan.....just doesn't happen. GO MEAN GREEN!

I am sorry that for a minute you had to defend our school. His comments were extremly rude and uniformed.

Last night I read my North Texan and was reinjected with Green juice. I have my copy of USA Today and my North Texans on the corner of my desk and my Mean Green screensaver for all to see!

Be Proud of the Mean Green. Not just our team but our school!

Just got some NT gear(one of those shiny footballs made by Baiden) from a local (Allen, TX) Kroger. I was shocked. SHOCKED! The Kroger in Denton never carried NT gear when I was in school there, let alone any stores outside the city of Denton.

That and I bought one of the new logo hats from a mall in Plano over the summer.

What's going on out there?....are stores actually starting to carry NT gear? Is the school doing more to get our gear out and into stores? Whatever the case may be, I am excited!

Oh...and I pretty much agree with MeanMag on this one. We need MORE fans. Stop all this talk about "real" fans vs. bandwagon fans. I, for one, welcome anyone to Fouts field who wants to watch a college football game. Come one, come ALL!...esp. this Tuesday night! I'm taking off from work to make this game....so can you!

Hip! Hip! Hooray for that TIgreen01!

See all of you at venerable (going on 60 years old) Fouts Field. I think Denton County will step up to the plate Tuesday night at Fouts for all our non-Metroplex fans who cannot make this game; although earlier today, Island Eagle of Galveston, Texas, posted today (and I very liberally paraphrase IE): "If I can drive up from Galveston to be at this ESPN2 televised game, anyone else can and should do the same!"
