We are hurting in many areas. It would take a PMG-length diatribe to name even half of them but one stands above the rest to me and it is quarterback. Mitch Maher was one of the best quarterbacks to ever lead the North Texas offense. He could hit the deep ball. He could hit the out to the wide side of the field. He could go over the middle. He could throw any pass with zip and accuracy. We all got a taste of what he meant to the team when Jason Mills led the team against then NE Louisiana in the meaningless 1994 regular season finale. For five years we had a revolving door of quarterbacks that could not get the job done. Mills, Corley, Bridges, Attaway, McClain, Gully. Then Scott Hall and Andrew Smith came around and we were solid at quarterback. Hall graduated and we all know the tragedy involving Smith. We lose Byerly to grades and now we are starting a quarterback who if we don't lose Smith would probably be a 3rd string guy. Inexperience at quarterback is what's really holding this offese back(wow there's a revelation nobody on the board knew). We are NO THREAT to pass. Southern Miss knew it, MUTS knew it, Tulsa knew it, Kansas State knew it. EVERYONE knows it. Every team from here on out will stack the box with 8-9 and dare us to pass which we will not be able to do. Meager is simply not a threat to throw downfield and if it is because he has not fully healed from his shoulder injury then he has no business being in there. If Meager can't throw the ball at 100% then get Philips in there. DD stated that Meager missed reads about 70% of the time against MUTS. I don't see much improvement from him. Meager may turn out to be one of the best that's ever played for us but right now his inexperience is hurting us more than anything else and it is going to take time for him to gain experience. We may be in for a long 1995 or 2000 type season.

I think Meager did quite well this week. Other than hit the reciever in the numbers what do you want from the guy?

The recievers were INEPT Saturday. Meager is looking better each outting. He isn't the problem here.

Play calling, and an O-Line who isn't controlling the line is the issue. This week, the Recievers looked bad, but I think that's a hiccup, and I think the Meager/Quinn combo will start to work this week. If we can correct just ONE of these two things, we have a much better outcome.

I'm hoping the playcalling will improve a tad in SB play, as they will uncover some of thier tricks and secrets to compete in the 'Belt. The O-Line needs to play just a little bit better to let the running game open up a bit and give Meager the time he needs to pass. Don't give up yet folks. I'm not the most optimistic guy on the board, but this team has improved each week, it just hasn't all clicked together. I fault coaching for this, but I'd be surprised to see it again next week.

Well maybe that's a glimmer of hope. But it isn't fair to Meager to only give him 10 chances a game, 5 of which are of the desperation long bomb "hope our ole Johnny can catch it" variety.
