REALLY IMPORTANT PERSON OF THE WEEK

by Steve Davis

Bruce Bell, UNT running backs coach

It's a little bit of a stinko weekend for football around here.

The Cowboys won't hut and hit until Monday night. The college schedule is something of a yawner where the heavyweights are concerned.

So it looks like a terrific week to reconnoiter up I-35, to Denton, to check out a couple of UNT running backs who just happened to lead the NCAA in rushing the last two years.

Patrick Cobbs did so in 2003. Jamario Thomas' did it in 2004 as injuries knocked down Cobbs.

UNT plays Tulsa (the would be-Sooner killers last weekend) Saturday in Denton. Mean Green running backs coach Bruce Bell is the man overseeing UNT's pair of game-breakers. It's up to Bell, who played at UNT under Hayden Fry, to get the most out of these two prizes. Of course, sometimes coaching is pretty simple stuff.

"I just make sure they are on the bus and on the plane," Bell says with a laugh. On the difficulty in getting both players lots of carries: Sometimes, it is. We wish both could carry it 28 times a game. Right now, it's whoever is hot. You get into a rhythm in games, and sometimes, you don't want to break that rhythm.

On his role of managing egos and psyches: It's really easy because they are such great kids. We went in today [Monday] and talked to them about how each game is gonna be different. They understand that each game is different, and they know they have to prepare for it.

On the players' differences: You wouldn't believe how great a student of the game Patrick is, and that is starting to rub off on Jamario. Jamario, that first year, it was all instinct. Now, he's picking up some more technical stuff, and that's going to carry him even further.

Glad to see it from someone, the DMN's same Belo friends WFAA did a big story during the 10pm news on the "possibility of SMU upsetting A&M". Very unnerving, after one win the local press seems to think that this team has won the national title. They've gotten more attention for this in the last week than we have in the last 4 years.

For 33 years I have come to expect that; many of you who have been around this longer have to. That is why we build all things at Eagle Point Campus bigger, better, more fan/student friendly and Texas UIL HS play-offs friendly than what Smu has built.

SMU is land-locked with their campus location, stadium location and terrible parking. NORTH TEXAS will not be once all the highway infra-structure is in place betwen the 2 Texas interstates where our new football stadium will be located for and for countless tens upon tens of thousand of those commuters who daily travel this part of Texas. smile.gif

rolleyes.gif SMU will "NOT" (I repeat: WILL NOT) upset Dennis Franchione's TAMU Aggies in Kyle Field and..............................you can print that in 3 inch headlines.

GMG!
