UNT looks to reschedule LSU game

Oct. 29 appears to be best option, but hurdles still remain

08:37 PM CDT on Saturday, September 3, 2005

By BRETT VITO / Denton Record-Chronicle

North Texas and the Sun Belt Conference have examined scenarios to reschedule the Mean Green's game at LSU only to arrive back at square one – a three-team switch, UNT athletic director Rick Villarreal said Saturday.

UNT and LSU postponed their season opener scheduled for Saturday because of Hurricane Katrina.

The plan includes the following:

•UNT and LSU would reschedule their game for Oct. 29;

•UNT would move its game against Louisiana-Monroe to Nov. 19, a bye week for the Mean Green;

•La.-Monroe would push back its game against Louisiana-Lafayette from Nov. 19 to Nov. 26.

La.-Monroe athletic director Bobby Staub said late Friday he would look at options, but that the switch would be problematic because it would leave the team with consecutive open weeks.

If the game is not made up, UNT would need to make $500,000 the school would receive for playing LSU, Villareal said.

How does NT make up the $500,000?

WE COVER THIS WAY:

(1). 5,000 Mean Green Club members (RV's goal 5 years ago)

(2) 30,000 Mean Green fans in attendance at each home game this Fall

** We need our casual or borderline fans to step up to the plate with most of us on this message board to do this, and that is giving to the Mean Green Club at any donor level and just showing up at Fouts Field even on Game Day season tickets or not and sitting in any seat at whatever the price of the ticket.

If we do all the above, I think we would cover more than just the $500,000.

North Texas can easily make up the $500,000 deficit...just invoice Louisiana-Monroe for $500,000. Also, make sure that LSU drops the Indians from its 2006 schedule. Northeast Louisiana was low life and apparently so is its successor. In all seriousness, the commissioner of the SunBelt needs to step in and tell ULM to move the damn game and shut up.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, ...and when the Great Pumkin rises out of the Pumkin Patch next month to distribute toys and goodies to good little girls and boys, maybe he'll leave $500,000 for North Texas athletics.

I think the big hold up is ULM moving 2 games. Why can't we just play them Dec. 3 and then they would not have to move their ULALA game. If it was us I bet that we would not move 2 games without getting some kind of compensation.

The problem is where would we have our homecoming game then? Homecoming is one of the biggest draws of the season, and more of the community gets involved - Denton even lets us have a parade.

If we move both the ULaLa and ULaMo games, when would we have homecoming?

UNTGIRL, we would not move our ULALA game.  It is ULM that is having to move 2 games, not NT.  I believe that is the biggest hang up with getting this accomplished.

Actually, the biggest hurdle and the dealbreaker was that ULM did not want two consecutive bye weeks. Everyone else was fine with the changes. ph34r.gif

Moot are you saying that the deal is done, and that we are essentially looking for another opponet to make up our 11th game?

No, I believe we are looking at trying to work with some other teams who we hope might be willing to make schedule changes.
