Anteater,

What is the status of the Southern Miss campus? Did Hattiesburg take a hit?

Thanks for asking, C.

The campus had a lot of trees down, some windows blown out, tiles blown off the coliseum roof, etc. They got back power and water, today, but phones are still out. The semester has been delayed until Sept. 12 with no fall break and no Xmas break until Dec. 21. It remains to be seen as to whether that schedule can be kept.

Hattiesburg, itself, was not nearly as lucky. The last I heard there were eight conrfirmed deaths. There was severe damage to many houses and the business district. Very few areas have power or water, and it may be up to eight weeks before those necessities and phones are restored. There is little gasoline.

Bret Favre said (on Wednesday) that he had about 50 relatives (from the coast) staying at his house in Hattiesburg. His wife, Deanna, went out the day after the storm to look for food, and found nothing. They have a generator, but had run out of diesel to run it. He said that his fame and money couldn't generate food and things that were needed and that catastrophes are the great equalizer.

There was some looting after the hurricane, but I believe order was restored quickly.

I have family I still have not been able to contact, although I know through a relative in another part of the state that my relatives in the Burg are okay. An aunt and cousin had a tree invade a bedroom.

The team is staying and practicing in Memphis, courtesy of the Tigers. They play at Alabama on Sept. 10. In my opinion, our contest against McNeese State at home on Sept. 17 is still in doubt. Although the stadium may be ready, I really wonder if the town could handle an influx of fans to watch the game. Motels have sustained damage and are also being used by displaced persons.
