Due to the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, the Mean Green's Sept. 3 game against LSU has been rescheduled.

DENTON (8/30/05) - The North Texas football season opener against Louisiana State on Sept. 3 has been postponed due to the effects of Hurricane Katrina.

“After discussions with the administration at LSU, they have communicated to us their desire to postpone the football game in Baton Rouge scheduled for Saturday,” Athletic Director Rick Villarreal said. “Considering the circumstances, we are in complete agreement with their decision. As time passes and the scope of this tragedy becomes more evident, postponing this game is the right thing to do. Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected by this horrendous event and we will work with the LSU people to find an amicable solution when the time becomes more prudent.”

A number of locations on the LSU campus, including athletic facilities, are being used in the recovery efforts in the aftermath of the hurricane. The Carl Maddox Fieldhouse is being used as a special-needs shelter and the Pete Maravich Assembly Center has been designated as a triage unit for medical emergencies. The Bernie Moore Track facility is also being used as a helicopter landing site.

“Under the circumstances the decision has been made to postpone this game and we understand and support that decision,” head coach Darrell Dickey said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with all the people who are suffering from this disaster. Out of respect for those involved, our team is making plans to assist in the relief effort."

A makeup date for the game is being determined by the schools and is expected to be announced when available.

North Texas football will practice as scheduled for the remainder of the week, and will add a practice session Saturday morning.
