BATON ROUGE -- LSU football coach Les Miles canceled Monday's 3 p.m. practice on Sunday afternoon and will wait out Hurricane Katrina like the rest of south Louisiana.

Miles said his main concern was players whose families live in the path of the dangerous storm, which is expected to hit land this afternoon. Katrina was on its way to the New Orleans area as of Sunday afternoon.

LSU's roster has 26 players from the New Orleans area.

An LSU news release to students Sunday asked "students who remain on campus to take all necessary precautions and remain indoors as the hurricane makes landfall."

LSU canceled all of today's classes on Saturday and most of the campus will be closed. The LSU field house, though, will be used as a hurricane shelter.

Miles and his staff spent Sunday in the office treating the day like a Monday because he said they will likely miss work today. Miles first press luncheon of the season scheduled for today was postponed indefinitely on Sunday.

Miles and most of his assistant coaches are not from the south and have never experienced a hurricane. Miles is from Elyria, Ohio, and defensive coordinator Bo Pelini is from Youngstown, Ohio. Assistants Doug Mallory and Todd Monken are from Illinois. Assistant Josh Henson is from Tuttle, Okla.

LSU is scheduled to open the season at 7 p.m. Saturday against North Texas in Tiger Stadium, which was still undergoing construction Sunday afternoon on a new west upper deck.

"They're going to work as long as they can on Monday," LSU assistant athletic director Herb Vincent said Sunday. "They will also secure all possible projectiles around the stadium and batten down all other construction and equipment around the stadium for the storm."

The west upper deck is scheduled to have all its seats in place by the Sept. 24 home game against Tennessee with the project due for total completion until next February or March, unless it is damaged by Katrina's winds today.
