The town that y'all are in is called Denton right?

Is that the same Denton that is in the movie Rocky Horror Picture Show?

Do y'all have freaks running around y'all town?

biggrin.gif

That's a good question. I don't know if the movie is talking about Denton, TX.

But I do know if you hang on out on Fry Street on any Thursday night, or all day at the Fry Street Fair, you will see a lot of freaks running around town. biggrin.gif

The mentioning of Denton in the Rocky Horror Picture Show was a complete coincidence.

Of course, we are to also believe Universtiy of North Texas' very own author Larry McMurtry when he states that "Lonesome Dove" was not based on the events of any real character even though the movie completely parallels much of the events during that of the famous Texas Ranger Charles Goodnight. In fact, Goodnight's life long riding/law inforcing/herding/indian fighting partner Bose Ikard is nearly a complete duplicate of that of the exact type of character, Joshua Deets played by the great Danny Glover in "Lonesome Dove". In LD, Deets was a lifelong companion of McCrae and Call and as I said earlier, so was Ikard to Goodnight. Bose Ikard is burried in Greenwood cemetary right here in Weatherford TX. He is highly respected and considered one of our earliest founding hero's here in Parker County, so much so that one of our newest elementary schools is named after him. Interestingly, Deets is killed in the movie and McCrae writes on his tombstone about his life, mentioning how great he was and that he "Never Shirked a Duty". Not only was Ikard African American as was Deets in the movie, but Ikard's gravestone here in Weatherford has nearly the exact same words written on it including the part about "Never Shirked a duty". Coincidence?

Not so fast. When I was in school in 70's I was told there was a connection to the movie reference "Denton" and the real Denton, that it was not a coincidence. I believe either the writer or producer was from Denton, TX.

Stebo posted some info here a few years ago about it and the guy who wrote the movie had never even been to Texas much less heard of Denton Texas.

Famous Black Cowboys...Bose Ikard

This explains more about Ikard's life above. If you read the chronicles of the Texas fort trails about what Ikard, Texas Ranger Goodnight and Loving and all the other earlier settlers did to settle this area of Texas you realize very quick what kind of true bad asses these guys were. Simpley amazing. Still it's strange to hear McMurtry deny the similarities. I have the trilogies of Lonesome Dove and in the special feature section McMurtry clearly states that no character in the movie is based on an actual person. I guess to possibly dodge any trouble pertaining to written permission?

Denton is in reference to Denton, Ohio.

IMDB Summary

from http://rockyhorror.org

Where is Denton?

There are eighteen (count 'em) Dentons in the US - Arkansas, Georgia, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, Missouri, Mississippi, Montana (two), Nebraska, North Carolina, New York, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and Texas (two). There is also a Denton which is a suburb of Manchester, England. Denton is supposed to be "Anytown, USA." The popular belief is that the Denton in the movie is located in Ohio, which has been all but proven to be true with a piece in the Rocky Horror Scrapbook that shows Janet's address as 10 Main Street, Denton, Ohio. This can't be used as absolute proof, however, as the scrapbook was a limited edition piece that came out after the movie, and was mainly put together by Brian Thompson. More likely than not, when the name "Denton" was initially used, nobody gave any consideration as to what state it was in.

Brian Thompson is also English, and Rocky Horror Picture show is actually an English movie.. so if he got his inspiration from any Denton, it would probably be the Denton in the UK. Our sister city. Theres a plaque at Southlake Park

Well if it was the wrong Denton in Rocky Horror it sure wasn't in "The Lone Ranger"I forgot the name of the 1st Lone Ranger movie but in it there is a scene when the Lone Ranger is bogged down in a cavern and he yells to Tonto as there shooting at him. "Tonto, ride to Denton and get the sheriff".I think Denton is mentioned 3 or 4 times.

Also in the classic movie " Sam Bass meets Calamity Jane" the opening scene is a big horse race "The Denton Race". Denton is mentioned in that many times.Of course Sam Bass was a famos outlaw and had his hideout in Denton on Sam Bass Hill.In the late 60's and early 70's we would always go up there.Cannot reveal what we did up there back then but it wasn't looking for Bass's rumored loot.

I remember the SAG put on movies in the park. They actually put those movies on an outside screen. When denton was mentioned people cheered.Problem was half the people asked"why did everyone cheer" They were all to stoned to hear the Lone Ranger scream to Tonto to get help in Denton.

Anyway movies have had Denton and NTSU in them for yrs.I believe the Jesse Owens Story used Fouts field.Of course Unessecary Roughness,Benj[the denton Square] Have there been any others?

Who needs the Rocky Horror show. We had the Lone Ranger......

In John Wayne's The Cowboys, Bruce Dern plays leader of a rustler gang. When Wayne asked him where he was from, he said Denton County.

I do know the Rocky Horor picture show was open in Denton when it came out. I went to the midnight show at the ABC Cenima on University Drive to see it. It was before the audience perticipation things.

There was a movie filmed in that old Evers Hardware store on the square. Shame that it isn't there anymore (is it?)... anyways, when I was remodelling my bar, I got all of my supplies from them (despite it being a little bit higher then the local Super Handyman Store).. I always liked talking to the owner, very nice guy (and his wife)... The wife was actually the original daughter connected to the Evers Family Tree, the husband that ran the place was married into the family and was not an "Evers".. Anyways, there was a movie filmed there in the 80's or so, can't remember the name of it right now.

Stebo, it was a made for TV movie called "Finding the way home" starring George C. Scott. They filmed about two weeks of it at Evers at the same time we were filming "Necessary Roughness", and also while JFK was also being filmed in Dallas at the time.

Here's the plot for "Finding the way home":

Sixty year old Max is having something of a middle-age crisis. His marriage seems to go nowhere as the passion, tenderness and happiness vanished when their daughter moved out. On top of that he owns an antique hardware store which is close to bankruptcy. While driving home Max is involved in a traffic accident which gives him amnesia. Confused, lost and in a disordered state, he wanders into a camp full of Latin American farm workers. There he finds a new meaning of life, happiness and a sense of belonging. However, as his memory slowly returns it's inevitable that he must confront his past.

Strange about the bankrupt hardware store part since Evers isn't there anymore either. Weatherford had one of the last remaining antique hardware stores on north main called Carter-Ivy. It wasn't as nice as Evers by any sense, but it was featured three years ago in Texas Monthly as a must see place. The owner died and willed it to his drug addicted son and the place shut down last year. I had actually bought many parts for Boomer the Cannon at both hardware stores in the past.
