By BRETT VITO / The Dallas Morning News

DENTON – Three of UNT's incoming freshmen who played at least part time on offense in high school opened spring practice by working with the Mean Green's defensive backs.

Korey Washington played quarterback at Cedar Park, and Desmond Chatman was a running back at Conroe. Dominique Green played wide receiver and defensive back as a senior at Lawton (Okla.) Eisenhower.

UNT returns only one starter from its defensive backfield in senior cornerback T.J. Covington.

Briefly ...

Freshman Eddrick Gilmore worked with UNT's tight ends on the first day of practice. Gilmore was considered a college prospect as both a tight end and defensive end during his senior year at Alief Hastings. ... Former Sanger standout Chris Higgs, the younger brother of UNT safety Cliff Higgs, has joined the Mean Green as a walk-on.

Hmmmmm, he seems to have made significant progress from 03 to 04. Maybe he's one of those players that's a "late bloomer". If so, good news for us.

It's better than I thought.

2003 Rushing, 5.8 yrds per carry and Passing, 47.5% completion average

2004 Rushing, 7.2 yrds per carry, and Passing, 61.5 % completion average

Not bad for a "walk-on".
