UNT, Sun Belt seek marquee victories

By BRETT VITO / Denton Record-Chronicle

NEW ORLEANS – Of all the nonleague games Sun Belt Conference teams played in 2004, a pair of wins by Troy stood out.

The Trojans knocked off Missouri, a member of the Big 12, and Marshall, a consistent mid-major power. Those are the types of victories Sun Belt coaches and administrators said they strive for during the final session of football media days Tuesday.

"We all know this league is getting better," UNT coach Darrell Dickey said. "Other coaches who play us know it, but average fans are just finding out who we are. The more we can provide rushing champions, have a guy drafted in the first round and beat teams from a better conference, the more credibility it gives our league."

The Mean Green beat Cincinnati in 2002, Baylor in 2003 and will enter its 2005 nonconference slate seeking another memorable win.

UNT plays Tulsa on Sept. 17 at Fouts Field, and will face LSU, Kansas State and Louisiana Tech on the road to round out its nonconference schedule.
