You know, going to school is hard enough, but to go through this crap as well is a lot of pressure. And just imagine being at a school where millions of dollars riding on your performance. I'm vowing not to read anymore posts with the topic line as his eligibility. When our athletic deprtment has something to say, I'll listen.

I hear he's attending Summer school atNT and doing well.  This could go down to the wire.  But at least he is trying.

This is too much for me to handle... I need some closure

I'm in Los Angeles right now and I just heard from Kobe Bryant, who heard from a girl in Colorado, that Byerly would be eligible.

Take that for what you will but if I'm right I'll be back to post it in every thread on this board. laugh.gif

It would be nice to get an official word. It seems many schools have released news of ineligblity based on academics the past couple of weeks. Maybe we'll here something soon. sad.gif

First of all, this is a privacy issue. And the athletic dept (or the school for that matter) is not going to make any sort of comment.....nor should they.

Now, even if it wasn't a privacy issue, has anyone been paying attention to how forthcoming the North Texas athletic department has been with information in the last five years?

Recruiting comes to mind as my prime example. cool.gif

The privacy issue is tied into the Buckley Ammendment, which protects the student athletes. This law was basically unheard of until Texas basketball coach Tom Penders released the grades of Luke Axtell about 8 years ago in a huge stink that got him fired. Now, Athletic Departments don't release much info at all without permission, INCLUDING INJURIES. They aren't allowed to do it. Sorry to tell you guys this.....but you aren't entitled to get any official word from them on almost anything.

I've read on another collegiate message board's bylaws of being a poster and one of those bylaws was for its posters to not (under any circumstances) discuss the injury of its football/basketball, etc, student/athletes during the season.

The athletic department is allowed to tell the people that he isn't going to be with the team the next year for "personal and/or academic issues". The privacy act wont be intruded upon by just citing whether the player will be with the team the up coming season. All schools announce who wont be returning.

"When" they are allowed to tell you is the key point there. It isn't going to be as early as you'd like. The student athlete needs to go through the same process as any student, which could take a while. Plus, when the student decides to bail is an issue as well....or officially leaves the team.

My $.02.

Dismissals are announced soon after they occur but Byerly has not been dismissed from the squad. There shouldn't be any announcement until officially reported by the school or the player announces his leaving. There could be further eligibility questions that need to be resolved before any official announcement can be made.

As to injuries, those are not announced before games to thwart the changing of Vegas' gambling lines. Schools could affect odds by overstating the severity of injuries or not reporting serious injuries.

While it does appear that there's too much smoke not have some fire, we will just have to wait until something official comes from the administration.
