The Dallas Mustangs Blue 17's have won their pool and begin play in the NBA Gold Championship (top Division) elemination tournament at 3:25 pm Sunday at the Super Pit according to Texas Hoops .com

I was able to watch the Mustangs, and NT 2006 recruit Collin Mangrum, defeat the Houston Elite Superstars and the DFW Urban. Mangrum wore #40 instead of #15 as in the program. The program listed Mangrum as 6'3. NT fans should have no difficulty in identifying him. He is the only member of his team that has blond hair.

The first game must have been disappointing for Collin. Although he started the game, he played a total of about 10 miutes before being charged with his 4th foul and never got back into the lineup after that. Mangrum scored 3 points on one three pointer out of three attempts.

In game two Mangrum showed why Baylor, Tulsa, TCU, SMU and SFA showed interest in him. He started the game and scored 13 points in the Mustangs' 75-59 win over DFW Urban. Mangrum was 2-4 inside the 3-point line and 3-5 from beyond it. He was not charged with a personal foul.

Here are some opinions and observations:

1. He is a good athlete. He finished 3rd in the 200 meters at his high school district meet.

2. He has good bloodlines. His father was a QB at Baylor and for the Philadelphia Eagles. I wish I knew more about his father's career but could not find much.

3. He played the 2-guard position. He seemed as quick as the other guards. He was a good ball-handler. All his passes were on target. He had the ball stolen from him only once in the two games.

4. On defense he deflected 3 passes and had two steals.

5. He was eager to help out on the boards at both ends of the court. Showed good strength with the ball on a rebound that he wrestled away from two bigger player.

6. He proved himself to be a disease free jumper with his rebounding an even a slam dunk on a breakaway.

7. Plays within himself. Usually made good decisions. An exception was slapping at the ball while directly behind a dribbler. The refs always call that a foul.

8. Shooting is probably the strongest part of his game at this time. The Mustang fans in the crowd who know him best were expecting every 3-pointer to go in.

Thanks for the report.

I'm glad to hear he is geting experience playing off the ball. I think that is his future at NT.

With 4 early fouls in one game on none in the other, was there a difference in the way he played, or did he just have a tough matchup in the first game?

The Mustangs played man the first game. In game two they played a half-court zone-trap and a normal 2-3 zone after they ran up a big lead. I really don't think the man defense was a big factor. It looked to me like a case of just "bad things happen". Only one foul was a result of poor judgement.

He scored 7 points and had some nice assists in their 3:25 game today in the Pit.

If 6-8 teammate Gary Flowers (formerly of Dallas Lincoln) would have given up the ball a little more, maybe we could have seen more of Mangrum's game.

Only negatives were 2 air balls. I remain impressed that he can help us.
