If the Power 40 breaks away, so be it. Splits have happened before: major college/small college, 1-A/1-AA, FBS/FCS.
But they can't just play themselves and all have 7 home football games every season that they need for revenue.
TCU was just what the sport needs—someone knew that could break thru and win a title. 20 programs in 60 years have won them all. 55 of them won by PSU, tOSU, ND, Michigan, Nebraska, Oklahoma, USC, Texas, LSU, Bama, Florida, FSU, Miami, Clemson, and UGa. Add in titles by Tennessee, Pittsburgh and Auburn, who have 1 title each in the last 60 years but had won one before this, and you realize that BYU and Colorado were the only outliers. And we are very soon to see those two schools left behind, too.
When it happens again, it won’t be a choice. It will be because the Power 40 breakaway.
We just need to be able to play and compete with the next 60-80 teams. We haven’t done that very well in the last 45 years.
