06/27/05) - The Fouts Field turf renovation is nearing the midway point and is on schedule to be completed in time for the North Texas football home opener.

Crews are currently tilling and compressing the soil to help stabilize the field's base. This will ensure a smooth surface and will prevent the field from developing lumps over time.

After the tilling, liners will be placed over the soil and layers of crushed stone will be laid down before the Sportexe OmniGrass turf system is installed.

The Mean Green has made a habit of playing on Sportexe's state-of-the-art surface at the Wyndham New Orleans Bowl. Sportexe installed the Louisiana Superdome field in the summer of 2004.

The OmniGrass system is a 100-percent rubber infill surface that has proven to be one of the safest and most durable playing fields in the world.

The Mean Green will play its first game on the new surface against Tulsa on September 17.

      The Answer is Marketing....

      That's fine for the under 50 age crowd, but for over 50 (which is the older alums, potential larger donors, and longer-time overall NT supporters) you will not make contact with them. I would guess the crowd in DATCU stadium is 40% over age 50, 40% under age 25, and 20% in between.

      "Where Are The Fans?"

      DFW is the relocation capital of the U.S. More than 500 people a day are moving in from other parts of the country. We need to reach out to these orphaned college athletic fans, away from their home teams, and have them "adopt" the Mean Green as their local program.

      "Where Are The Fans?"

      I don't know "Matt from A700" but I see him as one of the type of fans that you describe. He has taken time to arrange and gather groups of fans for games around the state and country. Some do podcasts. The Maniacs seem to be doing a good job of getting more students involved. Perhaps the answer to getting more fans is in more grass roots efforts like these. For us "old timers" it was the Mean Green Club that got us to be lifelong fans. Tailgating groups seem to have somewhat carried on that tradition. We need to find younger fans who have the energy, health, and understanding what their peers enjoy and have the Athletic Department cultivate them to help with this mission. Any of you "youngsters" to the challenge?
