Track's Williams Runs Nation's Third Fastest 400-Hurdles

Senior Kory Williams qualified for his first NCAA Regional Meet by running a 51.13 in the 400-hurdles.

Arlington, TX (04-02-05) - Mean Green sprinter Kory Williams ran the nation's third fastest time in the 400-meter hurdles, qualifying for the NCAA Regional Meet at the Arlington Invitational on Saturday.

The senior ran a 51.13, the second fastest finish in North Texas history and the top mark in the Sun Belt this season. This will be Williams' first trip to the regional meet.

"It was an unbelievable day for Kory and North Texas track and field," said Mean Green head track coach Rick Watkins."Kory has worked really hard throughout his entire career and he has put it all together this season."

The men's 4x100-meter relay also qualified for the regional meet with a second place finish. The team of David Schwein, Derek Logan, Brandon Irabor and Ryan Roberson finished in 40.63, the 16th fastest time in the country and tops in the Sun Belt.

Jessica Henderson set the school record in the hammer throw and recorded the second best discus throw in North Texas history. The senior's hammer throw of 143-09 (43.81m) earned her a fifth place finish. Henderson's discus toss of 146-07 (44.68m) was good for third place, and is the best throw in the conference this year by just under 10 feet. The two-time regional qualifier already owns the school record for the discus and the indoor 20-pound weight throw.

Rachel Runnels and Chi Chi Echebelem each achieved the fastest 200-meter times in the Sun Belt this season. Runnels and Echebelem finished back-to-back in eighth and ninth place and in times of 24.49 and 24.50 respectably. Both finishes are three tenths of a second faster than the conference's previous top time.

Deidra Wesley and Ryan Hill also set the conference's top mark in the high jump. The pair tied for fourth place with a leap of 5-05.75 (1.67m).

For the second straight meet, the Mean Green competed against world-record holder Jeremy Wariner. Running as an independent in the Arlington Invitational, Wariner ran the fourth fastest 200-meters in the world this year with a time of 20.52.

The Mean Green will return to action on Thursday, April 7 at the Texas Relays in Austin.

      He got a five year deal. He's made $2.5 million off of us so far. ($1.2m in year 1, $1.3m this year) And I believe he gets $100k more each year. So his next three years....he'll get $1.4m, $1.5m and $1.6m. As I bitched about earlier this year, before I stopped going....he didn't show up for his first radio show, and stayed for half of the next four. And yet he gets a $300k a year stiped for radio/TV (which raises his base salary from the original $900k).       Is this what an “offensive genius” looks like?

      The defense was disastrous last night but stop with this "offense did enough to win" crap. A 3 and out and interception in the first 2 drives is not doing enough to win. Were it not for a defensive stop after the onside kick and a Porter 79 yard run, we'd have been down 21-0 and counting. Yes, the defense needs to do more but what high powered offense puts up 7 in a half? This team did the same crap last year. No offense in the first half and then when we put up garbage time points people say "look at the offense." The offense is bordering bad. Tulsa put up 46 on UTSA. Texas State put up 49 and even Rice put up 29. Just to show you where our "high powered offense" stands.

      Atrocious in "all 3 phases" (that onside kick was a film study discovery by UTSA) but E Morris is just a horrible game manager. Just stupid decisions on multiple levels. I wish we weren't in the bowl hunt so Caponi could be fired if at least as a symbolic action to show the rest of the staff (minus Cobbs) they need to step it up a bunch. To the decision making, it's all been said. The timeout at 2nd and 16 with 49 seconds to go when most offenses would just let the clock run out to close the half, not taking reasonable field goal attempts early on, poor playcalling (honestly surprised a screen didn't get intercepted), these things fall on Eric Morris. Just garbage level game management. It's like he's playing a video game where there's no real consequences. Time of possession was about 39 to 21 in UTSA's favor. I know Porter had huge runs but UTSA also had huge plays. Why is it that others are capable of sustaining drives and eating clock but our "elite" offense can't do so? Defenses aside, you'd think our supposed top notch offense could be more consistent. I know our defense needs to make stops more consistently but anybody please tell me why our offense isn't capable of having some 6 or 7 minute scoring drives? Morris needs to relax on the pace of game. Just idiotic at this point.
