For the second consecutive season, North Texas men’s basketball standout Leonard Hopkins (Dallas, Texas) has been named Second Team All-Sun Belt Conference after leading the Mean Green in scoring with 17.9 points per game, which was also the sixth best average in the league during the regular season.

Hopkins, a senior guard, was one of 15 Sun Belt Conference players named to the three-team roster. The four-year letterwinner recorded double figure points in every game this season, including at least 20 in 11 outings. He scored a season-high 24 points three times and has recorded a career-best 482 points, making him the 22nd player in school history to score 400 points in a season. Hopkins went over 1,000 points for his career at Chattanooga on Dec. 29 and is now eighth all-time in scoring at North Texas with 1,267 points. The preseason All-SBC First Team selection led the Mean Green in scoring 22 times during the regular season.

Hopkins has hit 148-of-172 free throws this season for an .860 percentage, which is the second best in the Sun Belt. His 40 three-point field goals are the second most on the team and 131 for his career is the sixth most in school history. Hopkins is also second on the team in assists (48) and third in steals (35). His 90 career steals are the 10th most in school history. He was named to Chattanooga’s Dr. Pepper Classic All-Tournament team earlier this season.

Hopkins joins former Mean Green great Chris Davis as the second player under head coach Johnny Jones to be named All-Sun Belt Conference multiple times during the last four seasons.

North Texas will catch Arkansas State at 5:30 p.m. Friday in the first round of the 2005 Sun Belt Conference Tournament, hosted by the University of North Texas.
