North Texas Wins Rice Invitational, Broussard Captures Individual Title

HOUSTON, Tex. (2/8/05) - The North Texas men’s golf team started the spring season off with a sweep by winning the team and individual titles at the Rice Invitational at the Wildcat Country Club.

Freshman Anthony Broussard won the individual title with a final round of 2-under par 70 and won the championship with a two-round score of 3-under par 141.

"It was really just a matter of time with this group," said North Texas head coach Jim Bob Jackson. "As a coach sometimes you get impatient, but these kids came out and make some great shots at the right time for us to win".

The Mean Green were victorious by one stroke over Memphis with a two-round score of 584, which included a final round score of 3-under par 285. North Texas had four players shoot even-par or better in the final round to hold off the Tigers.

Freshman Austin Welch joined his teammate Broussard in the top 10 with a final round of 72 to finish at 1-over par for the tournament and tied for 10th place.

Raul Lemus had the second best round of the day for North Texas with a final round of 1-under par 71, and finished tied for 27th place. Andreas Kali shot a final round of 75 while Jason Lindgren rebounded from opening round 80 to shoot a final round score of 72.

"I’m really proud of the way that Anthony came out and played today. For a freshman to come out and do the things that he did was really impressive and really bodes well for the future," Jackson said.

North Texas finished first in a field of 15 teams and will now enjoy three weeks off before returning to action again on February 28 at the Roadrunner Invitational.
