McDermott is 60, and has been at Creighton since 2010.  He has led Creighton to 10 NCAA Tournaments.

He only makes $1.4mil there, surprised some Big 10 team didn't try to money-whip him away.  Maybe they did?

Huss played at Creighton (1997-2001) and was an Asst coach there (2017-23).  He just signed a contract extension with High Point last month (March 6, 2025).  No details on his salary.  Guess extensions are meaningless these days?

According to USA Today, McDermott made just over $2.9 million this year. When he signed his extension last year, CBS reported he was amongst the highest paid Big East coaches.

My favorite part of the CBS article:

"It's a notable development because McDermott had been speculated as a candidate for the Ohio State opening, in addition to the looming Louisville vacancy.

"There is no place I would rather be for the rest of my career than Creighton," McDermott said in statement."

Oh, it must have been an old salary quoted in an article I read today.

i am so d.g.a.f.  about all this anymore.  I refused to be fleeced for n.i.l.  anymore.  fleeced for donations.  fleeced for support for anything.  no bleed green. no nothing.

use me for a year plus, only to go get the first big job that comes around.  not gonna happen again.  fool me once.....fool me twice.

good luck to the new coach, but i aint financing his success to the next job.

will my butt be in the front non cheering no emotion row?  yes it will.  as long as they will let me.

this current thing is not, i repeat not sustainable.

Of all the posters on this board you are the one I respect the most. Your passion has been unsurpassed. You are also correct that the current status of things is unsustainable. I hope a solution can ultimately be found. I know your passion as a fan is unlikely to be impacted but it is difficult to make a commitment only to find there are those that you support are quick to move on to the next mark. Thank you for your support you have provided over the years, and I will see you at the games.

Thank you for doing the right thing and taking a stand. I'm sure there are others around the country who feel the same and I hope they join you in refusing to partake in NIL at their respective schools.

God bless you all you have done for this program.  Wish we had 100 more just like you.  As you accurately state this thing is just not sustainable.

Big loss for the University.  Sorry to see you go.

Coaches have always been able to leave in the dark of night, though.  Head D1 football and basketball coaches are a different breed.  Best rule of thumb is never get too close, cause they will eat their young if it means winning or climbing the ladder.  There are exceptions, but that's the rule.  I don't know the situation, but sounds like that may have been the case here.  Stick with UNT, your alumni brethren, and don't let these clowns get to you.

As far as NIL goes, I'm not sure it isn't sustainable.  Paired with unlimited free transfers, though?  That's where the problem lies.  P5 programs have been cheating and paying players for 100 years.  So it's absolutely proven to be sustainable.  Difference is you got to know the players you were paying were going to stay and be loyal.  Now it's highest bidder every year.  Fewer big money donors are going to be ok with that transaction.  Contracts are coming, I have to think...

Players changing every season is the part that hurts programs that need to build fan bases.
Fans “buying into” a program takes excitement over seasons of watching the same players.
You follow the Mavs to see Luka.  It’s an investment as far as buying tickets and donating and getting friends to come, etc.

I said this before, regarding football, but the transfer portal is just killing my joy for college sports. I quit CFB a few years ago--it just cost too much and it took too long. CBB isn't long for my fandom even though it's my favorite sport to follow. I could handle the fact that coaches could leave they wanted-it made sense. I don't like NIL but I understand why its there, but its easy to exploit and declare it "legal" to pay. But the portal is the ender. A brand new team every year, basically, if you have any success from the season before...its just impossible to support it with any kind of logical approach as a UNT fan. And this isn't even counting the ways the university actually acts about our teams, as well.

When Bucky McMillan became the new A$M basketball coach.....it was reported that the Aggies next year, have $7 million just for basketball. If they paid every scholarship player equally (and they probably don't)....that would be over $500k, per player.

Keep thinking we can stay in the NIL game. We can't.

All the more reason I always cheer for the upsets and Cinderella teams to beat the Power schools in college football and basketball.

$mut’s of the world will always try to buy their way ahead of others.

@flyonthewall when it comes to number of schools being able to afford this, how many do you think are out there?

Assuming that there will eventually be a breaking point, I just assume that there can only be, like, 5-10 programs that can continue along this path.  5-10 programs for a pro-like league? Or are there more?

And will the remaining programs in NCAA collectively agree to go back to the old model? Let those 5-10 super-budget schools have their own league and be done with them.  Let them be some kind of NFL-feeder while we enjoy our true student athletes for 3-4 years again.

I’ll add another “Thank you for all you’ve done for UNT.”

I have to be honest and say that your post made my day.  It’s going to take people like you getting tired of “being fleeced” before anything changes.  Hopefully you are the first of many who say, “fool me once…”

The only sports run this way and it is ruining it. Yea, we cheer for the name on the front but enjoy watching the names in the back grow and progress through their time here.
