Sorry, but the NIT does a terrible job promoting the tournament, ESPN doesn’t care as they just use it as a vehicle to talk about the NCAA’s during halftime and they switch it from channel to channel within the ESPN family to accommodate some story on a BBQ joint in backwoods Alabama. Because of this, the only people aware of the games are the fans of the respective schools.

I agree. For a tournament that is on their network, there is almost no coverage. I watch Sportcenter and other ESPN shows and they want to talk about women's NCAA before NIT.

Sorry...one of these is not the same IMO.

Prior to them covering the entirety of the Women's Tournament, ESPN gave it more coverage (about 12-15 years ago they even showed all the games on either ESPN, ESPN2, or ESPNU), but at the same time...they've always spent halftimes talking about the Men's NCAA Tournament.

We got 4 NIT games, probably a million people saw our program over those 4 games.  Did Memphis get a million people watching their one-and-done game?   The NIT was good exposure for our Brand...would have been better to won it!

I do feel the NIT has lost some shine.

But I totally forgot about the new Crown tournament until late tonight, so I checked the scores.  Never saw a promotion for it or any media about it.  I saw Nebraska beat UCF in the final today.  I had no clue it was even going on.

I'm a college basketball junkie and I didn't watch five total minutes of the Crown Tournament.  I almost forgot about it.  I flipped by and saw it was on TV before the F4 on Saturday.

Two games on the same night. Not a true apples to apples comparison.

College Basketball Crown Third Quarterfinal: UCF vs. Cincinnati (FS1, 7:02 PM-9:14 PM, 132 min.) • 0.181 million viewers

NIT Tournament Championship: UT-Chattanooga vs. UC Irvine (ESPN, 9:07 PM-11:36 PM, 149 min.) • 0.508 million viewers

Not exact game numbers but I can almost guarantee Memphis got more exposure for their 1 and done game. I would rather get blown out in the first round of the NCAA tournament than win the NIT. It's a worthless tournament for exposure now. First round of the big dance average 9.1 million viewers.

Number about the same for the North Texas vs OSU game.

NIT Tournament Quarterfinal #2: North Texas at Oklahoma State (ESPN, 9:23 PM-11:35 PM, 132 min.) • 0.325 million viewers

Both are more viewers than we got for the football game against Army on ESPN2.  Other than the bowl game, the Army game was our highest rated football game at 322K (0.322 million viewers).

The Crown that Fox created gave Nebraska $300k for its NIL, while giving UCF's NIL $100k for making it to the final. I did see that Tulane and Boise State were both in this. I wonder if we got offered a spot here. If so, I'd have to wonder if its not the smarter path. At least the winner of this event gets something we need badly, $$$$.

The NIT Final Four was fun to see mid majors, but it isn't going to translate for eyeballs, as we just saw. I was impressed with the coverage Fox gave this thing--they had their main pre-game guys doing coverage, and then had their #1 CBB team covering the games in Vegas. ESPN treats the NIT like its, well, the NIT...

Anyone know if we got any revenue for making it to the NIT semifinals?

Probably just expenses if I had to guess.  Still, the media was better then no media.

The extra games were not beneficial to the whole team (like football bowl games) since no bench players played and the whole team basically gets replaced each season now.

I also think the Crown Tournament gave you a better field. If they took Tulane and Boise State, they'd have taken us. Now, what I don't know is if that tournament is a buy-in or not. If it was, there's no way this administration and AD would do that. We aren't under Smatresk or Wren Baker anymore...

This is a few years old, but it probably hasn't changed much.

I am opposed to entering buy in tournaments. The 2018 CBI for our 15-17 team aided in fan support, bumped our win total up to 20 games, and increased excitement for a program that was on a devastating 5 year losing streak, but I never expect to be in that position again.

I agree...and I do think that we wouldn't do that ever again, either. Like I said, the leadership wouldn't even move a faculty appreciation lunch from the basketball arena even if it meant getting a home game against Oklahoma State here. They aren't gonna go above and beyond to pay extra for something that isn't guaranteed.

Good find...

For the NIT, it’s much simpler. In addition to having travel, hotel and other expenses comped, each school in the NIT is given $4,000 for every game it plays. It’s a total payout pool of $128,000 this year (2021).

It makes a BIG difference when your Admins are really behind making Athletics successful.

If they are not fully committed, the fanbase can see it...

Beating a dead horse but this could/should have been rescheduled. The women really took it on the chin . They had to travel to Troy and lost by one on a last second shot. Troy won the WNIT by a single point.
