It varies.  Andrew Luck is the GM at Stanford, and he just fired the head football coach there.  So it can be comparable to an NFL GM.

Isn't that what the AD is for?

Seems to me like we are wasting money because people can't/won't do their jobs...

I think you missed what I was saying.  Luck's role as GM seems to be the exception and not the rule, and even his job is not specifically to fire the head football coach.

It seems like only a few years ago, we were complaining that Bama had so many extra football staff that played a critical part of their success.  It seems clear that in the modern era of college football, it's an advantage as long as it's all well run.

?  He is 23 now, spent last year at TCU and 5 years before that at Houston?

So, he was 17 when Houston hired him as a personnel asst director?

WTF does a college football GM do?  Aren't his responsibilities to be handled by the head coach?

Expect the same with basketball, plus perhaps Asst GMs too.

Is this just a fad or is more staff really needed?

"The University of Oklahoma (OU) men's basketball program has hired former Sooners star and current Atlanta Hawks star Trae Young as assistant general manager, with Young also pledging $1 million to the program."

You kid but that is good practice in my experience.

Indeed, it's not a bad thing. These gen z kids are different. It's good to have someone young here to bridge the age gap.

Yeah, something isn’t right here.  Houston hired him when he was still in high school?  Sure.
