His buyout info was on their fan forum...

Robinson signed an extension in the offseason, makes buyout prior to April 2025 $500K, goes down to $300K after April. This may keep some smaller scools/conferences away.

Eric Olen, Eric Henderson (may have been too deep in Drake talks), Takayo Siddle, Craig Smith

Thank you.  I think most of those guys are similar to what we got, but I can understand why someone would prefer one of them over Robinson.

Hodge sounds like he has already checked out with the tone of "that program".

I wish any coaching change announcements would have been held until after the NIT.   I doubt the same would have happened with the still active NCAA Tourney team's HC.

It puts a diminished tone on the upcoming game and you wonder about the mental aspect of the players.  Are they thinking about their futures more than the current moment?   Does coach want me at WVU; where will I go now; will I have to start over....

“That” program,😥   …as he’s likely working hard, game planning, surrounded by said program as he spoke/typed that quote.

I hope he’s proud of his time & what he built here along the way.  I would think if so, he would’ve said “THIS” program.   Coach Hodge is still holding the keys to the Ferrari.  He hasn’t handed them over yet.

For those disappointed or underwhelmed by this hire, I’d also love to see who you think we could have had.  We got a coach who has had 3 consecutive 20 win seasons at a mid major that’s a notch or two below us.  Additionally, it seems as though he plays a style of ball that we’ve found successful over the past several years.  Obviously success isn’t guaranteed, but this seems like a solid hire.

Olen was a really strong candidate in my eyes before he took the UNM job. Cross at Troy, Huss at High Point (less likely as we didn't know his salary.)

Olen- $485k

Cross- $500k

Huss- Unknown

Yeah, that's pretty messed up to say that when you still have a game to play and you are literally still wearing the name on your shirt!!

I guess he did hate it here.  Someone made a comment how he disliked the crowd across from the bench.  Anyone know the details on why?   I know on the floor it seems like a social club.  The fans just sit there and I never notice them cheering.  They just sit there like they are at funeral service.    I am sure they pay to sit on the floor level but they to cheer for the team.

People at Tech disliked the McCasland hire. WVU is disappointed to hire Ross. People here don’t like this guy.
It will all sort itself out. If this dude wins 20 games, has us competing for the regular season championship, deep conference tournament run and can make noise in the CBI/NIT then this is a great hire.
Those are my expectations and there is no reason to doubt this guy will do that. And I am not demanding that we make the NCAA tournament. That mf’er is rigged against us.

With Coach Robinson's Chicago recruiting ties, I'm willing to bet he knows about Grant Newell, and he SURELY knows his former HS coach at Whitney Young, Tyrone Slaughter.
Maybe he can convince Newell to stay?  That would be a great get.   Hopefully Grant has enjoyed his time in Denton & would want to stay?   And if Grant stays, maybe Coach Robinson could pull his former teammate out of the portal:

I read somewhere that Robinson was recommended to Mosley by Hodge. (hahaha, it was probably here!).  Maybe Mosley has his finger on the college basketball coaching scene better than we think, but I suspect he got input from Hodge and others.  Just seems unlikely (to me anyway) that he had his eye on Robinson just waiting to swoop in before anyone else did, but who knows.  It didn't really feel like a national search (did it?), but if he comes highly recommended by others in the business and trusted coaches then that carries a lot of weight.

Like others here, I did not know who Coach Robinson was or had heard about him before he was announced as our new head coach.  After watching his YouTube interview and getting to know a bit more about him and what he was able to do at Cleveland St, I think he can continue the momentum we have going here.  Seems like a good guy that's been around and successful.  Our season isn't even over yet and I'm already looking forward to next year and seeing what Robinson is able to do in the off-season.  Welcome Coach Robinson and Go Mean Green!

I've been pretty vocal on what other options I expected, but I wanted to go on record saying I don't dislike Robinson. He wasn't one of the names talked about or suggested by anyone, so his hiring was unexpected. I know nothing about his style or recruiting prowess, so my own ignorance and unfamiliarity are part of the reason I feel uncertain. I'm sure many feel the same way.

Agree.  Jared posted we used a search firm for candidates, as probably a lot of schools do?   Anyway, I don't know if some candidates are asked to apply, or only apply on their own and that's all you get?

This hire seems out of left field just from his location, but he has a lot of qualities we would put on a list...rising HC at a DI winning program, well traveled, can recruit, plays similar style to our current players, etc.

I'm sure it's a combo of both, as coaches see others get hired away if it's a program they see as a bump up they will apply as well as who UNT/search firm want to reach out to apply.

What I care about:

  • 1) Does he preach hard work and defense first ?
  • 2) Can he rebuild the roster every year from the portal ?
  • 3) Are we sure he Is not Tony Benford in disguise when it comes to coaching (he could recruit) ?

I am certainly willing to give him a chance. But, I cannot help but feel that the successful system we have had in place for the last 7 or 8 seasons is lost. I really wish we had a Hodge protege ready to step up.

In the end, we only have ourselves to blame due to the poor NIL and lowish attendance, considering the abnormal success the basketball program has achieved recently.

Worst case, it was a great run and put UNT somewhat on the map.
