No head coach NIT experience, no NCAA tournament experience, no conference championships, no major transfer threats from his roster, led a team that was 109 spots below us in NET rankings, 2-13 in Quad 1/2 games.

He very well may work out, and I hope he does, but this is the hire you make when you wont financially commit to taking a step forward.

Wow, well said.

Neither did Grant or Ross, what's your point?

Robinson has 3 straight 20 win seasons playing a much tougher non-con than UNT.

Oh but @untbowler thinks his 20 win seasons are awesome!

As much as I loved Grant and Hodge. I thought they had finally gotten us to a point where we would "break the mold" and make a splash hire.

Not saying this won't work out, but its kicking the can down the road.

Does anyone realize that they had to think about coaching salaries on some of these big names y'all want as they would detract from the money they would be spending on NIL?

Sooo...by that logic, we spend less on a coach to spend more on players, yet that coach that you paid less wouldn't be able to spend that money wisely.

Not sure I agree with that logic.

True, but SEC play is MUCH different than Horizon play.

He has a higher winning percentage than his predecessor who is now the Head Coach at Missouri after coaching 3 seasons at Cleveland State. However, his predecessor did win the Horizon Championship.

Dennis Gates only Head Coaching experience was at Cleveland State and his record over 3 years was 50-40(.556). He was subsequently hired as Head Coach by Missouri.

Daniyal Robinson, the next Coach at Cleveland State, has only had Head Coaching experience there and in 3 years his record was 65-42 (.607).

What does SEC play being different from Horizon play have to do with those facts?

An interesting tidbit on Coach Robinson, he was retained as an Asst coach at IASt by Coach Otzelberger.

That is a huge green flag since most longtime assistants of the previous regime are usually let go.

Coach Prohm probably would’ve loved to have him @ MurrySt, but I bet the Asst coach pay is better in Ames.

He took over @CSU the following year.

"During his first stint at Iowa State with head coach Greg McDermott, Robinson was responsible for recruiting players from Chicago and junior colleges.[23] He continued recruiting from those areas in his second stint with Iowa State.[29][30][31] Robinson became known for his recruiting ability."

I hope he knows he has to get better players to be in the ACC.   Now go out and get them.  We have no time to wait on recruiting.  Wonder if any players will stick around and play for him.

The ACC?  Is Duke coming to Denton next year?  🙂

Of all the hires we could have made, this is one of them.

It feels iike the most okayest hire. Like best of the bargain bin.

I had hoped after our recent Bball success they would be making a bigger investment into it, but will give my support for now.

Who were you hoping for?

For those disappointed or underwhelmed by this hire, I’d also love to see who you think we could have had.  We got a coach who has had 3 consecutive 20 win seasons at a mid major that’s a notch or two below us.  Additionally, it seems as though he plays a style of ball that we’ve found successful over the past several years.  Obviously success isn’t guaranteed, but this seems like a solid hire.

I wish we could know who the candidates/interviews were, especially if they had 3-5 finalists, but I know they'll never reveal that.

My unnamed sources tell me the following interviewed:

Bill Self: HC Kansas.  Had really grown tired of a KU fan's, @rojomojo, push to tear down Allen Fieldhouse and turn it into a greenspace similar to what NYC has with Central Park.  KU would then play on an outfield court designed, again with NYC in mind, to resemble Holcombe Rucker Park.  This was all in a plan to address the volatile weather patterns in Lawrence attributed to climate change and not enough greenspace to combat these changes.

Deal Fell Through: When Self found out @rojomojo was in graduate school at North Texas.

Kevlin Sampson: HC Houston.  Was ready for the move up I45 as he was finding it tougher and tougher to admit to living in the armpit of Texas.  The liberalism of the North Texas campus coupled with his affinity for three-ways, texts, and UNT's acceptance of this vile practice were the major attractions for Sampson until he discovered the long banish from having anything to do with Houston, @Cougar King, was now stalking the Denton campus.  Sampson was quoted as saying, "The thought of that troll entering one of my three-ways (Texts) was nauseating enough, but there is a real possibility that could happen in Denton.  That's a chance I am not willing to take."

Tom Izzo: HC Michigan State.  At the age of 70, the draw to finally be able to coach the real Mean Green led Izzo to call about the job.  Not much is known about his interview, but one sticking point was the weather.  Izzo, being used to the cold dankness of East Lansing was worried about the heat of North Texas.  That, and the amount of sunscreen that would be needed to cover the bags under his eyes.  When an NIL deal collapsed between Izzo's eye bags, Matthew Stone's legs and Coppertone, Izzo was out.

The rest, as they say, is history and Daniyal Robinson is our head coach.

This isn’t necessarily who I would have wanted but USF just got a guy that was 10 seconds away from knocking us out of the NIT at home. Same guy who recruited Brandon Miller to Bama and led a large NIL push for Arkansas State. Obviously he wasn’t available but compared to a hire made by a worse basketball program in our conference, this is very underwhelming.

Because they got a guy that couldn't beat us?

I get it, but it’s kind of an odd argument considering we might have hired him if we were hiring before USF.  Can we get an example of someone who was actually available?

Eric Olen, Eric Henderson (may have been too deep in Drake talks), Takayo Siddle, Craig Smith
