He has a higher winning percentage than his predecessor who is now the Head Coach at Missouri after coaching 3 seasons at Cleveland State. However, his predecessor did win the Horizon Championship.

Also, he was tied for 2nd, 7th, and tied for 2nd in Horizon play.

True, but SEC play is MUCH different than Horizon play.

This is what's head scratching to me. This is the best we could do after the 8 years?  What was it that lead us to this guy?  I didn't see him being mentioned for any other positions.  Feels like a step backwards.  In fact, I would have preferred to go with someone who has experience at the JC level since they are constantly rebuilding year after year.  But what I know nothing about hiring coaches, so it could end up being a great hire.  It won't deter me from going to the games.

Constant rebuilding is the name of basketball today.

I am like a few on here. I honestly don't know how I feel about this hire. Here has done decent at a lower conference, but hasn't really won anything.

Assistants will be key to his success IMO. These coaches at the lower level are always a gamble.

I don’t know much about him, but I’m willing to give him a chance. I wonder if he’ll be able to bring some of his players and possibly some of the better players from the Horizon league ala Dusty May did with Michigan and the AAC.  Let’s finish strong in the NIT while he builds his staff and gets recruits!

Don’t know if his 6-8 freshman son can play but he averaged about 5.5 pts and 3 boards. According to the coach, he did t have any superstars last year.  I think Ross Hodge recommended him.

On the podcast JD posted (that I posted here) earlier, he said he had recruited a Ross Hodge JUCO player to Houston. Robinson also praised the job Hodge did here.

Obviously will have to wait to see how his team’s here look on the court, but I’m intrigued.  Seems like a solid hire from his resume and the style of play fits.  A others have said, JUCO experience and HC success   at other lower level schools seems to be the Wren/Moseley blueprint and he’s got that too.

I give it two thumbs up and another one sideways.

Let’s all just chill. Give it a chance and see where this S rolls. If we’re below .500 in February, I’ll buy a beer for anyone who meets me at Lucky Lou’s before the game on Feb 10-17. Lol

10ish maximum lol

He was impressive in the interview, which doesn't mean much other than he can effectively communicate.  I am not sure who some of you thought NT had a shot at hiring, but most likely anyone hired would be a significant risk.

Hodge was a success because he could identify talent that would come to NT.   Ross couldn't afford to buy players, but had a great vision of what combination of athletes would mesh together.  Robinson's ability to do that will determine his success.

I hope NT mitigated some of the risk by limiting the contract to three years with reasonable buyouts.

I like what I see out of him but let's all be honest, a lot of what he will be able to do will depend on what the University is willing to cough up for NIL monies since they are taking that over in July.  I do like his resume and he is certainly as qualified as you would expect.  I also am interested to see what type of assistant pool he will have.

The part that sits badly with me has nothing to do with the new coach, but can we for once get someone on our wishlist? A name people have heard of before and a top rising coach? Huss, Olen, Cross, etc. were all talked about, just like with football, the hire is someone no one saw coming. I guess I thought we were at the point were we are poaching, and this doesn't feel like a poach.

I mean that with all the respect to the new coach and willing to see what he brings, I think we just have to all be honest and say this wasn't what we expected.

This is the way I feel too. I am not going to denounce the hire, but it doesn't make me all warm and fuzzy like Hodge did.

Cross redid his deal with Troy so that ship had sailed.  Jared did the best he could with the limited resources we have.

We could have doubled any of those coaches' salaries, or even the UC Irvine coach. Maybe it's not the reality, but I think we all felt those coaches were in a range that were attainable. Except for Huss, since he's at a private school maybe he was getting paid a hefty amount.

His son is a 6'8 forward and a freshman so that may be good.

They said he is a defensive minded coach.  Maybe not to our standards at 68.1 though.  But ties to Iowa State sounds good.

I'm not super excited, but hope he can keep things going as good as anyone can these days.

Neither did Grant or Ross, what's your point?

Robinson has 3 straight 20 win seasons playing a much tougher non-con than UNT.

No head coach NIT experience, no NCAA tournament experience, no conference championships, no major transfer threats from his roster, led a team that was 109 spots below us in NET rankings, 2-13 in Quad 1/2 games.

He very well may work out, and I hope he does, but this is the hire you make when you wont financially commit to taking a step forward.
