Never heard of him but he seems ok.

No ties to Texas at all.

I think that matters less and less in basketball and especially in today's college athletics but he was an assistant at Houston from 2010-2013 according to Wikipedia.

Don’t hate this hire. Pretty successful HC at an under resourced program. Still on the younger side. Winning overall record despite playing a Horizon league non conference schedule. Winning record in conference play with 2 of the 3 years being pretty darn good. Willing to give this a chance.

He has major Chicago connections and was a long time assistant at ISU... He has more connections than anyone UNT has hired in the past decade

Connections in nearby Chicago. That was a must.

Pretty weak conference.

I won't pretend to act like I knew him before his name started popping up the last few days or so but given his career path it doesn't seem like a bad hire at all. Been around the big and a little programs and was able to maintain success at Cleveland State after their previous coach went to Mizzou.

I don’t really see how this is underwhelming.  3 consecutive 20 win seasons in the Horizon, which I don’t know much about except Oakland won a game or two last year in the Tourney and Robert Morris gave Bama all they wanted this year.  Seems like a better hire than most other names I’ve seen mentioned…coaches with little to no HC experience with a mid-major.  I’ll support this hire until it proves to be a bad one.

He'll have all the time in the world to establish strong Texas ties. That's what a staff is for

Its just a bonus that he has national connections that will help us recruit

I don’t know much about him, but I’m willing to give him a chance. I wonder if he’ll be able to bring some of his players and possibly some of the better players from the Horizon league ala Dusty May did with Michigan and the AAC.  Let’s finish strong in the NIT while he builds his staff and gets recruits!

I am optimistic.  Head coaching experience is a plus plus a winning record.

i hope he talks to all of the assistants especially Forte and Andre Shaw and considers them.

Texas connections only really matter in football at this point

The difference is I think keeping McCasland/Hodge ties would be important.  NT is a really unique place with issues that very few seem to get.  I don't think someone who has worked at another Texas school would understand exactly what they were getting into in Denton.

I'd have preferred to hire someone that has been on a NT staff, but if that doesn't matter just get someone you think can evaluate/pick up underrated talent and can work with an entirely new roster every season.
