Yaxel turned down millions out of loyalty.  It would be sad if his coach left for the money.  Especially with the ties he has there.  And his contract is $1.3M with a $100k increase every year and Pitino's was $1.2M.

Breaking news! Coach in his 5th season and 2 NCAA tournament appearances makes more than coach in his 2nd season and no tournament appearances.

Y'all can't actually be surprised Kennedy makes more, right?

That's funny considering Hodge's new contract is reported to be around $3M?

The point is, I don't think we would or could pay that.  We paid McCasland $800k and he actually won in the tournament.

IIRC Mac had guaranteed incentives that put him over $1M.

I get it.  I'm joking.

It's been said but the yearly raises are important to remember when looking at these salaries, and potential HC hires. Those raises add up and the longer a coach is at a school, the more they make.

McCasland made $1.1 million during the 2022-2023 season. Kennedy made $900,000 that same season per the deal he'd signed in July of 2022.

I was appalled when CJ Noland left North Texas for New Mexico. Turns out that New Mexico gets crazy levels of support from its community. No real professional sports there so New Mexico games are a big deal and the program has way more $ than other mid-majors.

For sure.  But they wouldn't pay Richard Pitino what UAB pays Kennedy.  I guess we'll see.  They definitely get more exposure than UAB, get further in the tournament, and more butts in the seats.

Almost any mid major coach would cover that position.

Yes....UNM gets great support. And the MWC has been a 4 bid (at least) league the last few years.

But then I remembered....the MWC is about to be broken up.

So am not sure how great the UNM gig is any more.

Yeah... UNM basketball is getting left to the wayside and it's pretty remarkable.

UNM pays him 1.2 million. About what Kennedy gets at UAB.

$100k less.  But do you think they are on the same level?  And why would he leave his alma mater for less or the same?

Honestly hard to say if they're on the same level with the recent Mountain West losses but UNM has shown they're willing to spend for basketball. They renovated their arena around 2009 at a reported cost of $60 million. I'd imagine they'd be willing to bump pay for Kennedy if he's the guy they want.

Their arena is what we should aspire for if/when we build a new arena.    Fantastic facility.
I watched us play there 3 days after the NM Bowl in 2018 (Rose went off.  We won.).   Their team was not very good at the time, and the place was still full/hostile, so yeah, they get plenty of community support.

I've watched games but never really paid attention to the crowd. I looked at their attendance the past 3 years and it's pretty consistently between 9k and 15k. Very impressive for a mid-major.

https://www.statista.com/statistics/219827/attendance-at-ncaa-mens-basketball-games/

Expand that attendance rankings list and you'll see New Mexico on there, above Texas Tech, Uconn, Memphis, Alabama, and Michigan. Very impressive.
