Two opponents have bested the North Texas Mean Green men's basketball team this season. One was an in-state rival -- the other was a staff appreciation lunch.

A university-scheduled luncheon forced the Mean Green to hit the road for their NIT quarterfinal game against the Oklahoma State Cowboys on Tuesday, according to the Denton Record-Chronicle.

Despite NIT appearances in three previous years, including a 2023 championship win, the university didn't feel the need to block off the UNT Coliseum, better known as the Super Pit, in case it was needed for postseason play.

North Texas athletic director Jared Mosley told the Record-Chronicle that the school worked to explore alternative venues but weren't able to find any.

"There is no guarantee even if the staff appreciation luncheon could have been moved that we would have been selected to host due to other planning the NIT does and not knowing if television would have slotted our game for Tuesday or Wednesday," Mosley said.

Not a fan of Mosely. Stupid mistake and now nothing but lame excuses trying to defend there lack of action. The.            " Luncheon" has morphed into a National Embrassment in college athletics. The Leadership of UNT have set back any positives they have gained in since Mosely came on board.

This stupid mistake will have a impact on NT Atheltics for the future in all sports. Just my opinion.

It's straight-up lying. I hate that.

I think the egg on the face is warranted, but I don’t think it’ll have long term ramifications..unless it happens again.

Have you been a fan for a long time around here? Not trying to be an ass, just wondering. Because this is basically par for the course around here since 1979, if not before. We run our sports like we are a big city ISD that just offers them, not caring if we actually accomplish anything, just don't cost too much.

Just another lame-ass excuse by a do-nothing administration.  Pathetic!

I don’t want to throw any district under the bus, but I used to work at a Dallas area school district who would have done something like this.  This district is not known for success in sports as a general rule, especially in the past 10-20 years.  Now, do you think Southlake Carroll or Allen would give up home court advantage in the playoffs because of something like this?

You’re good, man. I started at UNT in 2001. I think this will soon be forgotten about….it can’t happen again, though. I’m just glad we won. The backlash from a loss would have been miserable for Moseley and company.
